I just got a new system and I went to transfer my GT save data and it says that it cannot be copied.

That means all the license tests and stuff need to be done again...not fun considering I have all gold in the first two license categories and just started working on the 3rd.

Do I really have to start from scratch?

I understand they don't want someone unlocking every car then just sharing a file online for everyone to have everything unlocked...but this is a bummer.

Do it this way.

The problem with that is you are forced to transfer EVERYTHING over to the new machine - you can't pick and choose, which is rather annoying.

Don't know whether it will work but have you backed up your PS3?

Hopefully if you restore it should transfer everything over...I hope:)

Using the backup utility won't work as the save game is PS3 locked.

PS3 noob question... Do I need to have GT5 installed on the target system first?

If I do not have GT5 installed on the target system first, I am concerned that installing it after the transfer will overwrite my gamesave data.

If I do have GT5 installed on the target system, I am concerned that I will not be able to access the data, or that the transfer will fail.

Edit:

it looks like the destination system HDD gets formatted, so... I guess that answers my question. And trophies have to by synced first.

Edit:

HOW do I sync my trophies?

Sorry to Hijack but I have a question that is related.

If you use the Backup Utility and restore that backup to the same PS3 will it restore the saved game? I am thinking about upgrading to a larger hard drive and was wondering about this.

Data transfer completed 100% successful.

NO REPLAYS were saved, NO COURSES from the course-maker were saved

checking for other missing data now...

Anyone else?

I need to know about this as well.. I'm considering picking up an external hard drive just to back up my ps3.

Yes, you can restore a copy-protected backup to the same PS3.

If you follow the instructions...(off the top of my head) It says to:

Deactivate your content on System A
Turn OFF System A
Turn ON System A With the Cord connected to System B
Turn ON System B
Use the Data Transfer Utility
Complete Transfer from A->B
Activate Content on System B
(At this point System A will be unable to use any copy protected content)

*Activation happens in the account managment section of the XMB*

Note: You cannot Back-up copy protected data Ie...Movies, Some Game Saves etc... and Restore it to a new PS3. The ONLY way to transfer it to a new ps3 is through the transfer utility. This makes it so there is no way to DUPE your data. Also...it causes HUGE issues if your primary ps3 refuses to boot up, as you just lost all your copy protected data... (Demon souls save included !)

I can confirm that the backup utility will backup the game save and restore it to the SAME PS3 it came from. I can also confirm the transfer will transfer it to a new PS3 with the noted issues above of replays and courses not transferring.
I had a fast hard drive in my 60gig that I wanted into my new slim. So I first did a drive swap on the 60gig using the backup/restore. That actually seemed to work with no issues. Then did the transfer to the slim, only new issue I had was that the car thumb nails were mostly gone in my garage. But you can add them back one by one so not a
huge issue. I recommend if you are going to do either operation to do some searching on the topics as many have had problems (not GT5 related) that I did not have.

One thing to be aware of with the transfer thing- you have to deactivate the system you are transferring from. Then activate the new one after the transfer. This is required for paid for downloaded stuff from PSN to work. There is a limit to how many times you can do this activate /deactivate thing for a given PSN paid for item.

I also noticed the missing thumbnails, how do you restore them?
