Well.... look what I've bought! Got it on saturday of last week.

Been a Windows user since 3.1 was the big new thing. Decided to get this new machine, though, because the college I'm starting at is all Mac-based, it I figured I might as well just go for a Mac instead of a Windows laptop, just to make things easier.

I really like it so far, and I haven't seen any sign of overheating or anything.

It's a 15.4", 2.16ghz, MacBook Pro, by the way.

'Fallen to the dark-side?'

Sounds more like you've 'seen the light'

You have all been turned. I will do what I must.

Congrats. Some essential downloads:

Camino - unless you need FF's extensions
Flip4Mac WMV component for Quicktime
VLC Player - for files that Quicktime doesn't like
Adium

and don't forget about two-finger right-clicking. Have fun with your new Mac

He has fallen to the dark side. Either that or his flash isn't working.

You will now realize that this has been a life changing purchase. Everyone seems to be buying those now!

2 more essential downloads:

QuickSilver - you can pull up any application, file, whatever in a matter of seconds. It makes the Start button on Windows obsolete.
StuffIt Expander - It opens up a ton of Mac filetypes that you can't open normally open without it. Not every application comes in a .dmg or a .zip, so this is necessary.

And here's a good website that lists a ton of good Mac apps.

Anyway, you have finally seen the light. Prepare to hate Windows with a passion.

A fellow 4chan user! On my GTPlanet!? No way!

Also, Mac isn't the dark side. It's the more expensive, easier to use, better looking side.

It is. But OSX could be run by a chimp.

I wouldn't say that. It's almost a ritual for me when 10.4.x updates are available.

1. Remove all USB devices except keyboard+mouse
2. Verify/Repair permissions
3. Download combo updater from Apple site (never through Software Update)
4. Verify/Repair permissions
5. Restart
6. Pray/hold breath/wear lucky boxers/cross fingers and hope nothing goes wrong

Overkill? Maybe. But I've never had problems updating while others have.

With Ubuntu, it's just:
1: Click The update thingy when updates are availible
2: Enter your password
3: Hit Update
4: Restart (Sometimes)

OR:
1: Open the terminal
2: Type:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
3: Enter Root Password
4: Restart if necessary

Easy, and never a problem
.

Don't forget
Code:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
after 'apt-get update'. But sometimes things break in Ubuntu after an update as well :scared:

I've had a bit of a breakage before. Forgot that I left on the screensaver during a larger update, left, came back, and it was locked up. Good thing it wasn't that bad. Failsafe terminal fixed it:

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

One thing I hate with Mac laptops is that unless you're buying the "upscale" model, you have to resort to a hack to allow it to use dual screens (the feature is there, but locked otherwise :banghead: :grumpy:). And once you've done it, there's no easy way to move the friggin menu bar from one screen to another, as possible with Windows...

Really? Because when I updated to 10.4.7, my iPod was plugged in, I typed in my password, it updated, and then I restarted.

You Bought 4Chan!?

Haha. That's a cell phone pic, actually. No flash to speak of. I woulda used my Nikon, but I just got my cardreader a few hours ago, so my only option was to use the cell and bluetooth the pic to my computer.

Oh.... on the 4chan subject... I took that picture to post to /g/, then just reused it here, lol.

I'm Maxim#yUZcmRE/lw on 4chan, by the way, I post on /o/ (automotive) quite a bit, and also frequent /cgl/. (I set up the 4chan Anime Expo gathering a couple months back, as well.)

Try Apple boot camp if you want to run Windows too (for games, programs you have only for PC or can't afford to buy a Mac compatible version (Photoshop for example)).

I'm going to throw Boot Camp on there when move up to campus for school next month. Software is cheap as heck at the campus store. Legit copy of WinXP, for example? $20! Same price for MS Office. I'm going to get the student deal from Adobe, it's, IIRC, about $300, and includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, etc.

Sweet deal! I presume the Adobe thing is Creative Suite 2? I have the premium version (comes with Adobe GoLive! and Acrobat 7 Professional extra) and it's very nice. Adobe Bridge is abit of a resource hog, but it's pretty useful.

Yeah, it's Creative Suite 2. Price is actually 399, but my school may have a deal to get it for less.

Yes, you have fallen to the dark side :p

I am still thinking about buying one when they are cheaper and have more options avaiable, but for now, I'm a PC user :)

Well, Macs are on the light side, since they're white or silver. PCs are the dark side since they're usually colored black, or dark grey, etc.

:sly:

Yup, you’ve definitely seen the light. :) ’Grats on the purchase – you’ll love the little thing.

Carl.

Nope, not anymore. The MacBook supports screen spanning, just like its big brother. In fact, the F7 button is used to toggle between screen spanning and screen mirroring.
