Oh no... I've fallen to the dark side...

I just bought a MacBook, too (sadly not a Pro), and love it :D.

One (probably really stupid) question: should I still worry about Spyware/Adware/Viruses and install some thrid party software or did this thing come pretty well-equipped? First-time Mac owner here, so I'm not sure. Thanks.

Macs cannot really get viruses. I mean, they can, but the most common way of doing it is downloading a .doc (Word document) in a spam email.

For just the sake of it, however, I'd turn on the firewall. Click the Apple logo on the bar > System Preferences > Sharing, then it should be in there.

Congrats! I just got my MacBook a little over a week ago. :)

Viruses have a terrible time in OS X, because there’s almost no place to hide (remember, the Applications folder is literally just a folder – there’s no Registry). That said, the only thing I’d do is enable the built-in firewall. Don’t install third-party virus scanners or whatnot – you’ll be wasting your time and money.

Basically, just remember to only download files from sites that you trust, and you should be perfectly fine. :) I’ve never had a virus or spyware or adware or any other crapware, and 99.9% of OS X users will tell you the same.

BTW, you might want to read this. 👍

Sage pretty much covered the whole virus/spyware topic, but another thing about Windows/Mac maintenance that always comes up:

Many people wonder why Mac OS X doesn't come with a manual method for a user to defragment their disks the way Windows does. In most cases, there's no need to. Mac OS X and the HFS Plus filesystem have methods that reduce fragmentation, such as defragging on the fly. It's something you probably won't have to worry about. There's a way to check disk fragmentation in the terminal, however.

I'm planning on buying a MacBook Pro, not the 17" monitor cause who wants carry a huge monitor with them, especially with a laptop? I'm gonna get the 15.4" Pro when the Intel Core 2 Duo's are in them... Then I'll see the 'light'

Well.... look what I've bought! Got it on saturday of last week.

Been a Windows user since 3.1 was the big new thing. Decided to get this new machine, though, because the college I'm starting at is all Mac-based, it I figured I might as well just go for a Mac instead of a Windows laptop, just to make things easier.

I really like it so far, and I haven't seen any sign of overheating or anything.

It's a 15.4", 2.16ghz, MacBook Pro, by the way.

macs are set out well & are cool, so I transformed my windows XP into a mac design, IT ROCKS!!! mac looks, windows programs!!!

It all messed up & I'm on normal windows again now after nearly a year of work transforming :(

I'm going to throw Boot Camp on there when move up to campus for school next month. Software is cheap as heck at the campus store. Legit copy of WinXP, for example? $20! Same price for MS Office. I'm going to get the student deal from Adobe, it's, IIRC, about $300, and includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, etc.
Wait until CS3. CS2 is slow as hell on the MBP, and you'll have to buy a new license for CS3, I think.

I know, but I think I'm going to need it before CS3 is out.

I'm assuming you're talking about CS2 on OS X. I think he's going to run it in XP (also assuming) so it'll still be OK.

No, sadly, it'll be in OSX, that's the whole point of me getting the Mac. All the instruction will be for the OSX version, and we'll be using Macs in class to do photoshop stuff, so I've gotta do it on OSX.

Hopefully, though, CS3 will be out by the time we're doing photoshop, as that's not until the second year.

Does anyone else but me think that the whole Mac vs. PC debate (along with the "Windows XP is the devil" bullcrap) is incredibly stupid? They both do the same things, and both do them well.

I've had this PC (running XP) for four years, and I've had three problems the whole time. One was permanently solved by adding memory, one was permanently solved by upgrading the video driver (not strictly an XP problem), and the one virus I got was immediately removed by Norton. These three problems combined cost me about 2 hours of grief combined. Other than that, my computer has performed flawlessly for over four years.

Every time one of my computer science friends told me that I should ditch XP and run Linux, I had to hold myself from punching them in the face. When will you people learn? MOST PEOPLE DON'T WANT YOUR DAMNED ADVICE, SO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!

Um, I don’t think any of us were debating anything, so please don’t bring in the debate here. ;) ’K’ thanks.

I agree that Windows isn't that bad. They could just make it a little more efficient and get rid of the registry.

My mistake. I think CS3 is supposed to come out Q2 2007, so that might be too late. (Wait, did you mean 2nd year or 2nd semester?)

If you've ever used Mac OS X or Linux (GNOME/KDE), you'll find that XP is actually quite fast in comparison. I agree about the registry though. It needs to go.

Meh. All computer discussions eventually go there.

And the gOoSe said, "Let there be Knoppix".

Now I just need to figure out how to install the sucker...

Well since July 25th, I wouldn't say I've "Fallen" to the dark side, but rather . . . allied myself with the dark side. And since then, it seems like everytime I'm required to get stuff off of my desktop, it hates me for it. I mean as we all know, Windows is basically a headache that you get from a circular piece of plastic. But since I've had my Macbook PRO (15.4, 2ghz, 1gb ram) it seems to be even worse. Haaa..

Oh and regarding people talking about the Creative Suite. I've had Photoshop since 7, then I upgraded to CS. And when CS2 came out, I pretty much hated it. Well, maybe hate is a strong word, but I disliked it enough to keep with CS1 simply because I despise Bridge. And it takes up way too many system resources to run versus CS1/8.
