So I have always used 30W synthetic. I needed some today so I bought some at work. A co-worker of mine said that I'm damaging my motor using anything less than 50W in a '97 Eclipse GS with 140,000 miles. I've always used 30W & have had one the most reliable DSMs ever.

Am I wrong? :scared:

I wouldn't go THAT far ...

Refer to page 111 ...

If you live in any of the northern states you would be well served to use 5w30 in the cold winter months to avoid prolonged periods of oil starvation at engine startup. This alone will eliminate a significant amount of unnecessary engine wear.

...

In the summer months, a 5w30 motor oil is probably still sufficient ... However, you may see less oil consumption if you move to a 10w30 petroleum motor oil during the summer months.

...

In addition, if you own an older vehicle in which the engine tolerances might be a little more sloppy than they used to be, a 10w30 or 10w40 motor oil might not hurt. I'm not sure I would recommend running a 10w40 motor oil in any newer vehicle unless the owner's manual specifically indicates that 10w40 is an acceptable weight ...

I'm about to do my own oil change on my '01 4-cyl Accord for the first time (140k miles). I've always had the flunkies at the jiffy lube do it for me before. The oil cap says 5w-20, Jiffy Lube has been putting in 10w-30, and I suspect it has been getting that for a very long time.

My questions is whether anyone thinks it's a good idea to switch to the manufacturer recommended 5w-20, or if I'm going to end up with seepage or burn oil.

I doubt it matters, but for the record I always use synthetic.

Holy thread diggage. I'd have put this in the general questions thread.

Anyhow, go ahead and put in 5w-20.
