Your motherboard should have three inputs. Green (front channels), Black (rear channels), and Yellow (sub and center channel).

If you do, you're good to go.

I have green (in) blue (out) and red (microphone)

:(
It should still work, your sound "card" supports 5.1, just the colors will be different, you'd have to configure what RCA plug goes into what plug in the Audio console.

What motherboard is it?

Basically, with your current motherboard, if you want to use 5.1, you can't use a Mircophone at the same time. Because all 3 RCA jacks can act as input or output, you'll be fine.

...so wait, i can use my microphone input as a 5.1 sound system output??
yup :D all RCA jacks are created equal, but as a default setting, the Microphone jack is set as input.

awesome, event, thank you very much

:dopey:

now where would i plug the green black and yellow cords with my green blue and red inputs?

I'm looking into that, I have an X-Fi, so I'm not exactly sure, ATM, but I'm looking into it. That link says you have Realtek sound, but you said you have AC'97, which is it? Under device manager, is it listed as a SoundMax?

Realtec AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller

IM guessing Realtec is the brand and AC'97 is the model number

You know what, I found out some bad news. Your motherboard SUPPORTS 6 channels, but only through a decoder. Looks like if you want 5.1 you either have to buy an expensive decoder, or that sound card. :indiff:

lol ok

actually...how much would one of those decoders cost? (looking for link)
A lot. Decoders are mainly for hooking up multiple things (TV, DVD Player, computer, etc) to one system. With those speakers, I wouldn't suggest a decoder. It would be better to put the money that it would cost for a decoder to an X-Fi Sound Card. I would discourage a SB Live!, too. Go Audigy 2; the Live! was a good card back during the reign of the Voodoo 2 and 3dFX.
