Yeah, banning new diesel passenger car sales (sorry, "holding to the same emissions standards as gas cars") is bad enough, but prompting Audi to can the '06 TT altogether in the 5 CARB states is an act of war. 🤬
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for clean air and whatnot, but this "clean air uber alles, consumer choice and civil liberties be damned" bull**** has got to stop. It's costing automakers and consumers billions, and goes against most of the things this country supposedly stands for.
Grab your torches and pitchforks, kids. We're goin' to Sacramento!!! :trouble:

It isn't the CARB or anything doing this. VAG just didn't want to go through the trouble to get the car certified for one final year. Its only 5 states. Instead of trying to get the car certified, they'll just skip it in those 5 states and wait for the new one. The new FSI motor will pass just fine. Don't get all mad about this. Its just one year and 5 states. The car will be back in '07 with the new TT, and all 50 states will get it.

I know it's not a huge deal, but it's drops in the bucket like these that keep forcing manufacturers to make tough choices, and usually those choices wind up giving consumers the shaft. Like I said, I want the air to be clean and appreciate what CARB has done not just here in Cali but all over the world when it comes to making air pollution a serious priority, but I just don't see the logic behind their mutating into some totalitarian dictatorship that has absolute power to decide what is and is not good for us, especially when the federal government already does a...er..."good" job with that sort of thing.
Seriously, just imagine what'll happen when some newly-minted Hollywood starlet waltzes into her local Audi dealer, with her heart set on a brand new TT Roadster, only to have the sales associate burst her bubble and quickly try to sell her on a used one that's the wrong color and has the wrong options. Can you say "tabloid fodder?" :sly: 👍

This isn't new though, thats the thing. All the manufacturers know the regs, and VAG decided against it. This happens all the time. Back in the mid-late 90s, Toyota couldn't sell the Supra TT here in the states for a year with the 6-speed. Only auto would comply to OBD-II, so they didn't sell the manual car. And that car, like the TT, aren't big volume cars, so no sense in going through the hassle. Just wait a year. This is hardly anything to get worked up over, it happens all the time to all the manufacturers.

Who wanted the Audi TT anyway?

My mom but she's her late fourties, but then again I think all middle aged women want one.

There is a point to this though. The emmisions standards are set far too eccentric seemingly without reason (especailly since many of them go against established CAFE standards). And what about cars like the VW Touareg V10? I would assume that it is far more efficeint than a big pos diesel Ford or Chevy that are sold here, yet the overly sensitive emmisions standards banned that car outrught.

The reason the Touareg V10 didn't meet CARB standards is because it was a diesel vehicle with a GVW lower than 8,500 pounds. Same for the other VW TDIs, the M-B E320 CDI and the Jeep Liberty CRD. Ford, GM and Dodge diesel pickups, as well as the Ford Excursion, Ford E-Series, Dodge Sprinter, Hummer H1 and the newly released Duramax-powered GM fullsize vans are 50 state legal because their GVWs exceed 8,500 lbs.
As to the original point of this rant, I'm not exactly lamenting the loss of the TT, and I'm well aware that it was VW's decision to not spend the money to tweak just the '06s to meet CARB standards, but I just felt I had to get on my soapbox and at least get people talking about this matter. :)

How in Gods name do they suck? Go out an drive one, I loved it when I drove it. I think you just speak with no actual information.

**And I swear to god if you say "because Top Gear said so" I'm going to have to doubt everything you ever say about car forever.

No doubt it drives nice but for pricetag and looks especially looks it sucks soooo much. Guess what the non GT3/2 and turbo 911's suck aswell from ownership point of view. They suffer from RMS in which they need engine replacement everytime they leak. which can be as often as every 6000miles. Good car but it will suck if you own one. Just look at the amount of 996's that are on sale.

I must be talking some truth as you know me I sure do like my german cars.

It's helping the environment by having one less car on the road, and you wouldn't have bought one anyways, where's the problem?

Top Gear love it.

I think it's fugly.

Whether or not it's good or sucks doesn't bother me.
