When I was doing AOL chats, everyone kept talking about hating Texas for this, hating Texas for that... but if there's one state you'll see and hear a lot in America, it's California. What can you do in Cali? Almost anything, according to Midway Games. You can blast through a mall, drive up the cables of the Golden Gate Bridge, race around Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, almost anywhere in California, you can do it. One magazine reviewed the N64 game as a horrible racing game. What do I think about this game? Read on.

OTHER INFO: California Speed is based on the concepts of the Crusin' series. The thing is you find a car, get in, race around any section of the state of California you want, and drive off. All the while, you'll be involved in some strange situations like visiting Area 51 in... another state, riding around on the rails of some roller coaster ride, and even do a little circuit racing. The look and feel is like the Crusin' series. Midway likely had intentions of making this game as great as the Crusin' games and the Rush series.

PROS: not bad music; weird situations; nice selection of cars; nice selection of locales. I don't know if you could in the arcade, but on the N64, you can unlock the entire state of California and race around it, blowing up cities and stuff! Sick, man!

CONS: not as visually appealing as Crusin' or Rush; not too much variety in driving dynamics among cars; not as exciting; not even as fun as the other Midway racers of that time; the girl talking gets a bit annoying

FINAL VERDICT: Crusin' games were fun, Rush games REALLY fun, but if you like both of those games, you may be real disappointed with this one. If you never heard of this game back then, then you haven't heard of it for good reason. It's just not as good as Crusin' or Rush. (Final: 4.25/10.00)
