In 1994, a racing game by Manic Media and GT Interactive featured some insane go-kart racing called "SuperKarts." You can choose between 8 different racers, and race in 8 different locations with two tracks each. There were even powerups allowing you to use some turbo, oil slicks, and super grip. About a year or so later, Manic Media Productions created a sequel to SuperKarts, called Manic Karts. Would this game be better than its predecesor?

Actually, yes and no. This game is more serious while being improved in certain aspects. Environments are pretty varied and offer some great variety. SuperKarts was rather cartoonish in graphics; this game looks more real. You still choose between eight karts, and even enter your name and handle in the game. This will identify you during races. You are even able to enter single races without having to run a championship. For those looking for quick races, this is a big plus. There are four engine classes- 50cc (Easy), 100cc (Normal), 150cc (Hard), and 250cc (Expert). Track locations include London, Mount Blanc in France, Hamburg in Germany, Detroit, Tijuana, Corumba in Brazil, New York City, and Australia's Gold Coast. For the multiplayer gamers, there's split-screen gaming and network play.

PROS: improved graphics over SuperKarts; better sounding engines; turbo and super grip; more parts to upgrade in Season mode; jumps!; best looking karts are the 150cc and 250cc models; single race mode instead of always competing in a tournament

CONS: races can be too challenging on higher levels, no oil slicks, some hardcore fans wouldn't like this more serious; no time trials or practice

FINAL VERDICT: I'd still recommend this game if you want a solid old-school racer. Well south of Need for Speed, but still a fun game to play for those who love go-kart racing and anything-goes racing. (Final Verdict: 7.50/10.00)
