The iconic Ford Model T is often credited as being regarded as the world's first mass produced car. While it did get the world motoring, the Ford T wasn't the first. It actually was the "Curved Dash" Oldsmobile.
The Oldsmobile Model R was introduced in 1901 and was produced until 1907. The standard runabout model cost $650 making it one of the most affordable cars at the time. In total, Oldsmobile sold over 19,000 Curved Dashes.
With it's success, the Oldsmobile Model R is regarded as the first iconic or cult car. At the time, it was very popular. So popular, that the world's first song about a car was published. It was titled: In My Merry Oldsmobile by Billy Murray.
The funny thing is, the car's success was partially an accident. In 1901, a fire at the Oldsmobile plant destroyed a number of other models before they were approved for production, leaving the Curved Dash the only one intact.
