Try small theatre and headphones, I meant. :)

I've only got the option of "Living Room", "Large theatre" and "Small theatre" all three sound the same.

On your recording, I can't hear the engine through my laptop speakers with my headphones on (to emulate the effect of background noise, muffling the sound down towards the effective "noise floor"), but I can through the headphones.

This is interesting, tomorrow I'll start throwing some EQ at the recording and compressors of various aggressions to try to emulate this. But now, sleep.

Sorry, I meant using headphones.

It's just auditory masking: the wind noise masks the engine noise, but any background noise also helps mask the engine noise.

Reducing the background noise, e.g. by blocking it out, reduces the masking, so the engine noise is more easily heard. There's also the issue of hardware not being able to reproduce two sounds at vastly different volumes at the same time; headphones are usually very quiet (in real terms), so they're generally better at this (at least as far as typical consumer gear goes).

That isn't going to count for much with the living room setting, which compresses everything so there is a limited difference in loudness of individual sounds (busier mix means more masking; if everyone at the party talked a little quieter, nobody would need to shout to be heard).

And it's worth noting that the large theatre setting puts the quietest sounds well below typical background noise levels if the volume is set for "comfortable" listening of the very loudest sounds (so it's for a quiet room, or headphones only - or bleeding ears, whichever).

Im no video game sound expert. but I work in post production sound for TV/Film and had the same reaction as the OP when I cut a lap in the VGT. When we do a final mix for a tv show we listen to the sound mix through all types of speakers primarily the expected speakers of the watchers will most likely be using. eg crap tv speakers and headphones etc

A lot of changes/compromises are normally have to be undertaken due to this process to cater for the majority. I think this process has not been done to a professional standard with this sound update. (oh derr! lol)

With effects like wind, transmission clunks, brake squeals etc.. Less is more. they only need to barely audible to for the sound to feel authentic.

To end on a constructive note, I like seeing effort made to improve the sound and look forward to further improvements.
 
The more I listen to it, the more it reminds me of what it sounds like when I don't wear earplugs at bike track days. The buffeting gets really loud inside the helmet, but I can still hear the engine on downshifts. I think I would be dead if this happened in real life.
 
I like the idea and adding wind noises while driving (not braking), it's very subtile and a good addition. While under braking it's too aggresive and not a background-(masking) effect anymore, it pulls engine sounds to the second place and I can imagine that an airbrake can preduce a loud noise, the engine would do the same (like the Veyron or Alpine VGT). It's to much. I don't like it, but it's not that bad I won't drive them anymore.

Anybody to do a vid with a non-airbrake VGT to find out if they added the wind-noise there too?
 
👍 Basically yeah, but in my case less extreme, I've got a direct audio feed so analysis would be easier.

Yes, yours do the same thing. The wind noise masks the sound of the engine under braking in your video. Apparently, we only start to hear the engine's sound when we're coming to a full stop and it only gets worse when your using a view that is closer to the interior view, it's pretty much impossible to hear your engine when you brake. I like that they made that effect, it's well thought of, but maybe they should tone it down a bit.

That wasn't my video, i don't have a capture device to record GT6.

My bad, I thought by "not mine" you meant that the wind noise didn't mask the sound of your engine under braking in your video. I guess you shouldn't have written anything with the video, it lead to this misunderstanding. :lol:

From what I have observed it seems like the amplified the wind noise WAAAYY to much. I only tested a few cars but even running the Indy track in Like The Wind the wind noise is so loud you can't hear the engine nor the tire sounds at all unless you fall into the draft.

Just wonder if the person responsible for this change always races with his windows down only. The sound gets so bad that it almost makes it sound like the engine is misfiring or sputtering.

They just need to revert this change back to where it was at. I am using a good 5.1 150x5 w/800watt sub surround setup in Large Theater mode and everything seemed very close to a real balance between the different sounds before this last update. I have been in cars over 150mph many times and in all of them you could always hear the engine, exhaust, and tire squeal over the wind noise unless it was in my 425+hp T-Top IROC Z with t-tops out and windows down at 150 mph which sounds about like the way it sounds in the game now...with the wind noise almost being deafening.

Yeah, that might be it, they messed up something when added the sound effect for the air brakes on the VTGs. It's too bad because if it was a small noise it would be a good effect, right now it's just like you said, it's deafening.
 
Air brakes sound right to me when I have the camera behind the car, but I think they shouldn't be nearly as loud as that when you're actually in front of the entire car.
