"One Hundred Million PS2s
PlayStation brand software shipments approaching two billion.
by Anoop Gantayat

November 29, 2005 - Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that as of November 29th, worldwide shipments of the PlayStation 2 console have reached the 100 million mark. The shipments break down to 22.22 million units in Asia, 37.14 million in Europe/PAL territories and 40.65 million in North America.

This feat marks a record for fastest computer entertainment product to reach 100 million units, Sony claims. The mark has been reached within five years and nine months of the PS2's Japanese release in March of 2000. The original PlayStation took nine years and six months to reach the mark and was, Sony states, the first computer entertainment platform to do so.
PlayStation brand software also seem to be reaching nearly uncountable highs. Currently, Sony lists over 14,000 PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles in its catalogue, of which 6,200 are designed specifically for the PS2. Obviously, this number counts local entries of the same game multiple times. As of September 2005, cumulative software shipments for the PlayStation family have reached 1.869 billion units."

Really impressive, almost half the time it took the original PlayStation to hit that mark. 👍 I wonder if the PS2 will still be selling more units than the X360 in the next six months/one year.

And the name of the article's writer is pretty exotic, eh? :P

Maybe, they're cheaper, a hell of a lot more games :sly: My girlfriend's dad just bought himself one because he wants to get into some war games, and he could give a crap about the newest and fanciest console. I'd like to get a slim one to go in my van when the prices drop a little more.

I'd get a slim if it was cheap so I could do the online stuff, now that I have DSL. My PS2 might be ready to croak too. :grumpy:

WOW! The PS3 might sell that many consoles since its backward compatible with all PS1 and PS2 games. I'll only buy one if they change the boomerang controller and GT5 turns out to be perfect.
