Passed another test today on the s-lisense, thank God, its so hard. I got the Mazda Mx-5 one. Only a bronze but still good enough for me. I've been close on the Team Oreca test at Laguna Seca, but that first corner kills me  Any advice?

I'm not looking forward to having to do the GT40 test at Seattle, I think I'll end up chucking the PS2 out the window on that.

My suggestion (and this has worked for all three GT games) is have three or four attempts so you get a feel for the circuit and the car, and then go and watch the demo a couple of times, and pick up where the computer brakes, what gear it takes corners in, and what lines it takes.

The demo is a much undervalued resource in the licenses and the time trials. Take advantage of it.

Oh yeah - make sure you watch in the in-car replay, with all the display options (throttle, brake, steering and speed) selected.

 That wasn't quite as bad as it seemed to be at first. They didn't put down a particularly difficult time for you to beat. The best advice is something that you most likely already know if you are up to the S-Licence is to be persistent. Use the ghost car and keep trying.
On the First turn at Laguna, brake from the outside, lunging in, but don't hit the throttle all the way, ease the button, and you will find that you can hold the turn with a light touch. :)

I've just past 3 more tests :D I've passed the special stage wet, the Penzoil at Midfield and the Laguna Seca test (thanks for the advice guys).
I have been stuck on the lisense for months and now suddenly I'm finishing them all at once. Why do you think that is?

a) Because I'm using ghosts now
or
b) Because your skills are wearing off on me now

when i was going for the s i had trouble with braking to much instead of just letting go of the gas, the demos helped that (and the GT40 test was the easiest for me, that car is a god on that track :) )

I think when you follow the demo (or ghost) you start to get a real feel for what it takes to be quick (ie. braking early, maintaing speed through the corner, positioning the car, maximising speed out of the corner etc) so that you become a bit more practised at it. As you do it more and more you start to just drive that way - it's actually really good for your driving technique both in the game and in real life.

It's always good fun practising 'slow in - fast out' on the road - you get the superheros charge up the inside and then just bog down in the corner, and you just charge through the apex and sweep past - fantastic...

Well I have now passed the s-lisense, after only getting past the first test for months I managed to complete the other 7 in 2 days.
So I'll give my opinion on the whole test.

1) Apricot Hill - Vauxhall VX220
Easy, a basic warmup for the tests ahead, no major challenges.
2) Seattle reverse - Ford GT40
Real hard, the best thing to do here is to see how your ghost does against the demo and to see where the demo pulls away from you.
3) Trial Mountain - Mazda Mx-5
Again fairly easy, but so slow.
4)Midfield - Pennzoil Skyline
Once you learn how to control the car its not very hard, the hairpin just before the tunnel is a challenge though.
5)SS route 5 - Sprinter Trueno
Good accelaration and braking skills are essential on this otherwise you'll be spinning all over the place, again very slow though.
6)Laguna Seca - Viper Team Oreca
A beatable time but the first corner is a pain in the a$$
7)SS Route 11 - TVR Griffith
As long as you don't spin off there isn't any major problems, finished this first time :D
8) Cote d'Azur - Toyota GT-One
Hard as hell, you have to be an expert just to finish this one without spinning.

On S-8 use the Manual Transmission and for every corner that is either 1st or 2nd gear use 3rd and coming off that corner downshift to gain speed, I got Gold on this test on my 3rd try (when I was going for golds).

I was gonna try that if I hadn't past, coz I noticed that in the low gears your wheels just start spinning as soon as you accelerate out of a corner.
Getting golds is so hard, I've got 3 silvers, the rest bronze.

Hi all,
I was reading this thread and vatman was right. Using the demo and the ghost are great learning tools. I figured this out in GT. Also, use Setting and Run not only for tweaking your rod but also learning the course. The other courses are in the arcade mode. This game, more than anything, is about learning, learning to race, learning to drive, learing the course, learning the car. Yes persistance has something to do with it, in that when you learned to ride your bike you, first had training wheels and you were relatively good at it. At some point Mom and Dad decided you learned enough with the training wheels and it was time to pitch them. Now you faced a new challange, balancing on two wheels. You fell. You got up. You fell again. You got up again. You were bound and determined to LEARN to ride without training wheels, and you did. Same thing here in GT3. Did you pass each test the first time you attempted them? NO. Stop lying, you did not! :-) Anyway, you didn't because you had not learned what was required to pass the test. When you did, you breezed through the test. I will argue that you can get the Gold if you practise to get faster.
The technique of slowing down by letting up on the gas is a real world technique. It is used in ambulance driver training I used to be a corpsman in the Navy, I know. It is just a great technique you can use to drive safer, unless you drive like a maniac.
Using your brakes is not designed to slow you down, primarily. It is more of a control technique in cornering. You might keep on the gas in a straight, but you might slow down for a tight turn like a hairpin turn. Enter with the brakes on and midway through the turn release the brakes and hit the accelarator. Anyway, so much for Troy's words of wisdom for what they're worth. Have fun and Happy Hunting,
Troy

the GT40 test is very very hard...took me a very long time.....but here is the trick...

1) Manual
2) Practice
3) Brake Markers
4) see step 2

I got gold on the GT40 test on one of my first tries, it was my first S-Licsence gold, I didnt use the Manual Transmission, pure auto. At the end of the back straight downshift into 1st gear and feather the throttle until you are out of the corner you will gain more time and shifting into 2nd and have to go really slow through that right hander.

really?

i've asked a whole bunch of people who have golds in all s-license (including myself) and we all agree that the GT40/seattle test is one of the hardest....

the easiest is hands-down the last one.....guess the developers decided to give us a break.....

anyway...haven't seen you in a while...whatz up bro?

I think everyone when they first start out thinks that S-8 is hard but when I was going for all golds (now have 41) I didnt find it all that hard, because as I progressed through the game I got better and I learned to deal with no ASM or TCS S-8 is easy for me now, the hardest so far on S licsense has to be the Miata or the Tureno at SSR5 wet (for me) the GT40 was pretty hard but going down the hill towards the hairbin going into that fast right hander I got a good powerslide and just whipped through the turn and got gold.

Nah, Miata and Trueno tests were easy. Miata one, there's a lot of time to be had from using all the kerbs in the first three corners. Trueno test was simple, just think of it as a cross between a rally stage and the wet circle. (Incidentally, I found the 60m wet circle test in IA the hardest of all the license tests so far). I found the GT-40 one really hard as I kept hitting the walls, especially at the first chicane, but I passed on my second clear lap. It was just that that was like my 80th go!

Up to S-6 now, need to get a clear lap in, but I think that I'm braking too early for the last corner, and could be carrying more speed through 2 & 3. Turn one is easy: brake early, down to 2nd gear, hold hold hold hold as you turn, then as soon as you can see the exit kerb, bury the throttle - you get really good drive through there.

If you go nearly full speed through corner 3, very little braking, it helps your time a lot.
