I was thinking about this today... how many people do you think would participate in an online sanctioning body... with a championship, that had a payout?

Here's what I think I'd like to throw together when the game comes out:

Sanctioning body organization:
-The organization would have its own website, complete with forum, screenshots, video, results, etc. The goal would be to have a level of compitition that covers a wide range of vehicle performance and member budget.

Membership:
A member would obtain a $5 membership to the website, and could be renewed once per year. With a membership, one would receive the following:
- Email updates and notifications of upcoming events
- Access to the 'drivers only' portion of the forum, which would contain discussion of events, event issues, and general trash talk.
- Access to the video section, which would include a video collection for each race

Race Entry:
-Single race entry would be on a first-come-first-serve basis. Entry fees would vary between $2 and $300, depending on the length of the race. A wide variety of events would allow different levels of compitition, with different levels at stake. Athough most races would be on the lower end of that spectrum, the highest entry fees could be something as crazy as a true 24 hour at the `ring.... split the entry fee between your co-drivers, and then split your FAT earnings when you take home the trophy.
-Championship series would consist of several races and would have an initial entry fee, of $1 to $200, depending on the size of the championship, and the balls of the drivers. The schedule of the championship would be established before the first event. Each championship event would be held at the same time each day, (maybe 3 or 4 times per week) to fit different time zones and peoples' lives.
-Once a championship began, participation would be locked. (assuming that password-protected races could be created)
-A small payout would be given at the end of each race to the winner. Points awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place.
-A large payout would be given to the overall winner.

vehicle Classing:
-races would be structured in a wide variety of ways, from # of cylinders & induction method, to an overall power limit, to drivetrain configuration (FWD only for example), to marque races, or model races.. Also the availability of spec classes (exact car & mods, with only suspension setup being flexibleThis is depending upon what method online racing allows the moderator of the race to see the details of the vehicles involved.

financial management:
- An open account would be kept running, as entry fees and winnings are added and subtracted. Entry fees would be paid out of this balance. Members could request a payout at any time, via paypal or check-in-the-mail. Deposits into this balance would be made by credit card or paypal.

results
- The results for all races would be subject for dispute for 24 hours.
- After this period, the results & replay would be posted on the website. If the race is too long for the entire replay, only highlights will be posted (crashes, lead-changes, etc.).
rules:
- Again, this is depending upon what method online racing allows the moderator of the race to see the details of the vehicles involved. (modifications, etc)
- Rules would be created to deal with blocking, punting, short-cuts, etc
- After a race, a dispute may be submitted by any of the race participants, for a small cost. If the results are in the favor of the disputor, this would be refunded, and the vilolator would be removed from the standings.
- Once a dispute is submitted, a clip of the accused action would be posted in the forum, and members would vote on the outcome.

______________

so.... I really think I'm going to do this, but wanted to get an initial response.
Again, I want to point out that there would be room for everyone, from the individual who wanted to spend $5 a month on races, and win a few bucks, to the person that wanted to spend hundreds and win thousands.

maybe I didn't look through that link long enough, but I don't see a method to earn winnings...

The idea is to make more then you pay...

I think that is a great idea. If you have the resources to do it right. As in all monetary transactions are secure and safe, i guess you could use PayPal like Ebay or something. I think you could make this work. I also think it will TAKE a lot of work to get it right. But I think that could turn into a very big thing. Only one question of mine: Would there be any legality issues with that?

o..alright then.

Websites devoted to racing leagues would be nice, and for the good leagues $5.00 a year would not be very much. Just think it is way to early to talk about racing for real cash, since we basically know, nothing about how online racing will work. But hey if someone wants to go ahead and spend the time and money setting up something, good luck. Do hope we can race for game credits, that would be very nice. Maybe even if they set up their online game site you could even like trade in say 1 million online game credit wins for real prizes, perhaps 1 million would equal a US dollar or something like that. They could keep and maybe should keep users online credits ( winnings ) separate from their simulation winnings. Perhaps this online credits could only be won in sanctioned events. Just my thoughts, its really to bad that so much is unknown about the online racing part of GT4

You'd may as well come up with a "Gran Turismo 4: Tournament Edition" before Kazunori or PD think about it. I do like your idea, though. In the "Gran Turismo Resorts" topic, I mentioned what I thought the Gran Turismo Resorts were. Saying that "did PD buy out vacation land and converted into a GT Heaven?" While you'll most likely have to go to Japan for this, some national racing competition would be kick-ass. No miss. It would show that even racing games can make for exceptional competition. I don't know if this can compete with Unreal Tournament or its XBOX "rival" PGR2, but I'll tell you one thing. As much as Gran Turismo 4 will make the history of the automobile more fun, it will also make racing fun as well. The automobile was born 118 years ago (2004 - 1886 = 118). So why not race history and modern history online? Only thing older than the automobile is American college football (135 years strong).

A professional GT leauge would certainly rival PGR2. Grey, I don't know how old you are, but if you had the money and the power, you can do it yourself and make yourself enough money to make at least 2/5 of what PD and KY make off of GT titles now.

*waits for someone to jump up with something that's been around longer than 135 years*

It's a great idea. The problem with great ideas is they often work out like communism - they get let down by the execution.

I would love to see leagues like this for online racing. The one thing you need to take care of here is cheating. You need to have referees observing races to make sure everyone's obeying the driving rules, and you need to be 100% sure cars are to spec, and you would preferably be able to save replays.

MLG hosts live, on-location, for-money tournaments for Gran Turismo 3, if anyone wants to do that...

GT3? People still play that game? Man get with the times.

I want to see my PunkBuster style car part checking system implemented.

For $500 first prize, people still play that game.

:bowdown: College Football is the ShizzNIt! Baseball sucks!

Go 'NOLES!!!!

Eagle your kidding right? Of course people still play that game. What else would they play? Are you new to GTP? Have you not been in the GT3 Forum?

rugby and soccer are both older than college football. rugby is a corruption of soccer, and football a corruption of rugby.

are you talking about in America? we're refferring to the great USofA only.

The American rugby team don't play hard like the New Zealand All-Blacks, though. This would be the hierarchy for an online payout system in my view:

LOCAL
Most major cities. Be the best in town to advance.

STATEWIDE/PROVINCE WIDE
The best within a state or province.

NATIONWIDE
Be the best in the nation! If you're really good...

INTERNATIONAL
You proven yourself, now take it all home for your home country!

It's kind of like an Olympics deal, then kind of like... well, competition is art. And as I would say, if you want to be the best, you have to be the best among the world. It's simple. If you know how to ride a Harley up and down I-45 or someplace and look good doing it, you have to prove yourself among others. Everyone should vie to become the best in the world at something. If you're serious, you need to compete. Businesses do it all the time. Whether it's fast food, computers, cars, or overkilled commercials about diet supplements, there is always competition. When one outlasts the others, that last man standing is the best in the world.

Business Management 101 is done. No homework is due. Have a good night. Class is adjourned.

New by some standards, not by others. I was kidding ;)

87chevy: Pretty sure he is indeed talking about American football.

okay, I looked at your profile after i posted, and then really hoped you were kidding, and turns out you were!:D

Okay, so can someone please state the year that organized soccer and rugby started in the USofA?

Another problem of all this is security. Both in the races, and in the money transaction. Someone is always going to cry cheat whenever something hasn't gone their way, such as an unexplained spin on the last bend or something.
One more thing is would you get liscensing off PD/Sony as you would be working and probably making money (something has got to pay for the server/organisation/time) using their software.

I believe that neanderthal was pointing out that the game known as "American Football" is junior, in terms of date of inception of the sport, than both Rugby Union (not Rugby League) and Association Football, since American Football is directly derived from Rugby Union, and Rugby Union is directly derived from Association Football (thanks to William Webb Ellis).

For context's sakes, my own football team, Sheffield Wednesday, are 137 years old (formed 1867). They are the only the second-oldest league team, after Notts County (1862).

The first recorded official game of Assocation Football to "modern" rules was held on 12th February 1861, between Sheffield FC and Hallam FC. This makes the game of Association Football 143 years old.

Rugby Union was played at Rugby School only in the 1820s. The official rules are dated at "the 1870s", making the official sport around 130 years old.

Rugby Union was adopted by Harvard University in 1872, but with their own rules. They invited a Canadian university called McGill to a match - but they also played to their own rules, and with only 11 a side. This is said to be the foundation of American Football, although some claim the sport started in 1869 with a game between Rutgers and Princeton, consisting of a 25-a-side match. The official rules however were first drafted in 1876, making American Football as a sport 128 years old (obviously with American college rugby being just that little bit older at 132).

I don't think that MLG has a license from Sony to put on tournaments, but no one's given them any trouble yet, and I don't think they will. They could technically take legal action (like EA did), but they seem to be indifferent to it.

Thank you famine, once again you come up with more than an ample answer. :D So, rugby is actually older in America, well I'm glad they "corrupted" it into American Football! Where would we be today without it???

Well, I still believe this online tourney is a good idea. It will just require time and money from someone to put it all together. I'll be glad to sign up for it when it's done. (even though I suck at GT3:O , compared to most of you people)

I wonder if it puzzles people how we wind up discussing the history of football and it's various incarnations in America in a thread about an online championship system for money.

Who did EA sue?

i wont use it, but why the hell not!

I don't think EA sued anybody, but they told MLG to stop using Madden for their tournaments, as it "competes" with the Madden Challenge or whatever. So MLG uses ESPN NFL Football now.

Closing the thread at Greyout's request.
