I am new here still, and I haven't seen anything posted about this. However, my question is has anyone thought about creating and or hosting a chat for GTP members for online racing? It would be faster than posting in the forums and we would be able to talk in between the races.

I thought that Bulletin Boards had that ablilty to add one too the forums. Since I have had my own BB license before, I thought I remembered seeing such a thing.

Before you shut me down on this, I would consider taking on such a task for the site. I have experience with chat servers and I have owned a few websites about Final Fantasy.

I just want to know if its feasable for the GTPlanet site to host such a thing. Or If it would cost more to buy another server in order to host a live chat server.

After doing a bit a research, I was about to remember the kind of chat software I used to use. It was mIRC.com It was really good software and easy to setup.

This has been discussed a couple of times in various places of the site, I think the most recent one was when some things in the premo forum changed this idea came up and was quickly dismissed. So don't feel bad if it doesn't take off now.

I won't get upset if it doesn't take off. I will just get a free chat room and post it in the Events forum, and see if anyone Uses it. I think its a great idea and would benefit us a lot in the communication side of things. Until we can chat on the game, this would be a great alternative.

Someone was thinking of creating an irc chat room but that fell through.

There is a really nice plugin for firefox but I forget what it's called. It opens a chat window with everyone else that is on the same site as you.

IRC chat sounds a bit difficult. DQuaN I think we should try and find that. Or if we're looking for an alternative, I think someone should just set up a meebo chat, its simple, and everyone can join in. Don't know if we can make them private or not but it'd be the easiest alternative.

Yeah, I think the idea was dismissed. Someone did set up a free chat though, for GTPers, but that sort of died after a few days.

I guess everyone likes the forums better than a chat? I personally enjoy chatting although it would be hard for me to continually post in fully correct english all the time. I'm just too lazy.

GTP chatrooms have been proposed and implemented in the past, and they are too problematic to control. Back in late-2002/early-2003, we had something called a "Shoutbox" which was like a chatroom, but more like a forum. It lasted about a week. An "official" GTP chatroom was also tried, and it lasted about 30 minutes before it was pushed in front of an oncoming train for good.

I think I speak for all the mods and admins in this case: We don't want to police everything said in the chatroom, creating/enforcing "gray areas" and distinctions between the two is a thankless chore. Reading it all would be a complete waste of time better spent on moderation.

GTPlanet will probably never have an "official" chatroom again, because Jordan does not want to be held responsible for what's said in the chats, and many of us don't want to read through the pages and pages of what is really just personal chatter.

We allow you give the Yahoo!/MSN/ICQ info in your profile, so you are free to contact each other, if so desired.

As Pupik said, we actually have had multiple versions of live "chat rooms", but I quickly removed them all due to rampant abuse. However, due to the way that online races are now "organized" in GT5 Prologue, I see a very practical need for real-time communication among members. If I do introduce a chat, however, it will probably be hosted by a third party (such as via Meebo's Rooms service) and GTPlanet user names will not be reserved or preserved, which could introduce many problems. I will have to think about this some more.

If you guys take a look at the GT5P Live events forums and take a look at my post I have made about live chat. I have had a room in place for about a month now. Everyone that uses it seems to think it helps a lot. The chat is a great tool to use when you looking to sync up with your fav GTP members.

I now have on average of 7-10 guys on there a night, with a few others that come and go.

However I think if you ever got a chat room on a high level it would get a lot more use.

As far as policing, come on, we are big boys here. I don't think we need a moderator there 24 hours a day.

In the chat, for the past month I have not witnessed anything that would indicate that we need a mod in the chat. Right now we do fine and we respect each other. It kind of like this: We treat each other on the chat like we do on the track; with respect and lots of room to pass.

Now if you are talking about full on 50 members chatting there in a day, then I would have to agree; a moderator would have to be there to control anything that got out of hand.

But I have dealt with chat rooms and chat servers before, so I think I could assist you with any kind of moderation you need me to do.

As I have said I have been operating a chat room for GTP members for about a month now. It’s on a free chat server and we all meet up there every night.

I would be happy assist you in any way to get things rolling. If you did want to provide a chat room for the site, I think we would have to have a chat room where there could be moderators. So if something were to happen, it can be dealt with.

If you wanted to host it on the site here, there is one major benefit of doing that. Posting your google ads in the HTML template with the chat room. So that way you could pay for any extra bandwidth you use with the chat.

Like I said check out the chat I have setup now and see what you think. We all like it and our only complaint would be is the public chat server that hosts us has a lot of sex chat rooms, so those people tend to trickle into our room on occasion. Which provides us with some humor and disgust at the same time. lol

Actually Robin, I'm a moderator of a forum that uses "shoutbox" software called InfernoShout, although we haven't had many problems, there are still the few that come in with "LULZ *porn link* CLICK HERE!!!!," and if a mod isn't there, it could go quite wrong, another problem is that it can kill possible forum activity.

The only way I see this possible is to hire a few (now or old) moderators to patrol the shoutbox, although that would lessen their posting ability, as they would have to watch the shoutbox constantly for a site as big as this.

So my vote (if they are being counted) goes to "I'd like a chatroom, but hosted elsewhere, properly moderated (3-5 Mods would be needed to cover all hours of the day, methinks), have decent software, and only be open to GTP members (my one problem I have seen with the parachat thing already), but if that cannot be implemented in anyway, don't bother"

From,
Chris.

Well guys, just to update you on how the chat is fairing.

Its popularity is flaring! We now have on average 12-20 people in the chat durning the hot hours of the day. Mostly NTSC, but we are lobbying the PAL guys to get in on the fun.

We have also moved to a NEW loction. So, NO MORE SEX CHAT nonsense. That is over. NO ONE, and I mean no one in your new location has bothered us or given us grief.

Thanks to Enter The Game, we now have Channel Operators and a registered channel so it cannot go anywhere. You can use the regular Java chat in the web browser or you can use mIRC(a IRC interface program) to chat there now. Its great there.

As of now, there is no need for moderation. We are all grown ups in there. Everyone is well behaved and we have not had one problem with GTP members creating problems.

If we get heated about a racing incident, we work it out.

However, if the chat goes into something like 20-30 per day, then Moderation would be required.

Just and update,
Chad

Thanks

Can we not have a Chatbox on here through vBulletin?

Robin

Yes it does. :)

Oh yay, I tried to join via mIRC and it refuses my connection...
mIRC been hating me lately <_<
But when everything works and you are in an active room things can get... interesting to say the least :p

*Edit*
Nvm, it finally connected lol

Did the IRC go down or something? It was working last night. But now its not..

I think you'll get a lot more information by posting here, IIRC, this thread is asking about having a shoutbox on the forum, not for asking what's up with an un-GTP controlled IRC room.

Chris.

Well, seeing as the creator of the "Un-GTP Controlled" room created this thread. I figured it would be a good idea to ask him here what was up with it. I know how IRC works and everything, just wondering why the channel was down.

And also, this thread was exploring all possiblities of having something for GTP not just a shoutbox. Read the thread before you decide to tell me I'm in the wrong place, when I'm really in the right place.

Getting a chatroom for each subforum would work, because then their wouldn't be one chat room full of members.

But, another thing is you'd have to have even more people checking on it because it'd be so spread out. I think the IRC room is great for now though, and more people should use it, we've already had a few nights with 20+ people in there.

From,
Chris.

I apologize for the chat room not working when you required it. But that is out of my hands. I just have a channel registered on the Enterthegame.net IRC server. So, for me really I am just like you..no control over it and play it by ear. The Chat rarely goes down, there have been a few problems with people getting kicked and such, but those were temporary set backs.

Yes a chat room would require more bandwidth, but advertising could out weigh that.

I look forward to seeing you in there.

Chad
