I have the bd Jp version. I live in Europe
I read somewhere I can't race European or US gamers.
Is there some way around this? probably not.
I tried the European account.
And late at night there are still some drivers, but I guess these are die-hards with the jp version like me.
I bet there are people here who have all three versions to play against certain opponents from other regions.

Why would Polyphony do this?
-To get me to buy the local version! smart move!
I live in Europe, should I get the EU version?
Is there a difference for which country you buy this?
Maybe hapf of europe is split up? Who knows?, no seriously! Who knows?

Lastly I think the board needs more stickies. More? Yes more stickies about major topics and people can post there.
Or some smart people can make a big thread with lots of basic questions like this and some more. I'd love to contribute, but I know too little. I try to helpo out others when possible though!

Why would you want more stickies, if you don't read the ones already there?

Those "big threads with lots of basic questions", guess what:

Btw, amar will be happy to know you just called him smart. 👍

Online latency is a big issue

As a European I know from experience that US players will have a ping of at minimum 145+ to a UK server, Japanese players, would be around 3 second ping (wild estimate). The fact that this current system relies on individuals to host the server causes highly variable connection quality depending upon where you and the host live in relation to each other. Simply put; there's no way online racing can occur globally with that much lag.

It seems that people are suggesting that the leaderboards and races are global. I'm stil not convinced as I've stated before. I've never seen this to be the case for any other online release on a console. Take GTHD for example.

1) I live in Europe, should I get the EU version?

2) Is there a difference for which country you buy this?

1) Yes (I have both)

2) Language, and if you buy outside Europe then you might be using the JPN servers to play online instead of the Europian ones.

^^agree beerz.....and d123456...i know your dutch and in holland lots of people call Japanese people the way you do...dude,i know!!:ouch:
but here you are writing international about a Japanese game....
spyrrari.

(je snapt mijn punt ,toch?....:sly:)...use JPN....)

same here, but i don't think its for specific regions only, there are so many new names appearing after EU release... obviously people from EU judging by their names and driving skills (great !) couple of japanese players also very good... i know :)
online only against your region would be senseless to me a least ! nothing PD would do, they are too sophisticated (perfectionists) to do such a noobstyle move...!
latency can be recalculated easily by a good algorithm, PD know how to pull something! someone tell me why ive played so many people with german, spanish, english IDs recently instead? :sly:

Well a Dutch buddy recently got a pal european setup, console + game and he was driving the first track with the honda entigra 04 and he told me there were lots of people racing online. Then I used same car and same track (I think) And I got 1 opponent. Thanks for those 160+ stickies. I think you proved to have a better point for my argument. I wouldn't know why you'd be against more stickies. Don't you like 'em? Does the constant flood of new noob threads bother you the slightest bit? Well, I know the mods are bothered. Hey just trying to help out. No need to get offensive.
No faq anywhere, this seems to be the only place for information, so I'm very fortunate to have found this place.

Thank you.

Oh, I love them. I even post there. 👍

Does the constant flood of new noob threads bother you the slightest bit?
Not just me, but everyone that tries to use this forum in a decent way.

Well, I know the mods are bothered.
What was your first clue?

Hey just trying to help out. No need to get offensive.
When was I ever offensive to you? In what manner?
Don't confuse a bit of sarcasm with being offensive, it's a big stretch.
I was trying to help too, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to reply and even post the links.

No faq anywhere
Search, and if you don't find what you're looking for, post the question on one of the 'big stickies' if it suits, or, if it's something you feel needs discussion in its own thread, then create one.

I think all regions actually might be able to play together. The reason I now think that is that I downloaded a save game for my JPN copy which had the F2007 of GT5:P and did some time trials on High Speed Ring.

Then last night I eventually got enough money to buy the F2007 in my UK copy of GT5:P and when I went to do a time trial of High Speed Ring my "Personal Online Record" from my JPN game was being displayed to the side of the screen

And the best online laptime shown in my JPN version was the exact same as the one being showin in my UK copy!

The PS3 and GT5P must be your first online racing experience. I say this because ever since PGR3 I've been racing with guys from Japan and Europe.
In FM2 I have six good English friends that are always on around the same time in the same room, and we don't have much lag. On occasion one player may have lag, but its never unplayable.
Also FM2's leaderboards are global, as is the game. I'm sure PD can do this to, but they are new to the online game and may take a while for them to get up to speed, especially if they are not going to look into what is working for other devs, and start from scratch.

I find it quite interesting that Namco, a company that had absolutely no experience in making online racing games, came out with an arcade racing game called Ridge Racer 6 for the Xbox 360, and then Ridge Racer 7 for the PS3, both of which allow you to race people from all over the world! And yet PD can't even get this done properly after having spent so much time fiddling with net code via the GT4 Online test prototype.

Ridge Racer 7 is a game I play online all the time mostly with Japanese and European people, and guess what? In a room with 16 people, there is no lag! And I mean N-O-N-E-! Period! Not only that, but there is only ONE player among the hundreds of thousands playing this game online, that is dirty player. ONE! Just about all my games are with people that race smoothly and properly. And this is an ARCADE game folks!

What is going on here? What is it about Ridge Racer 7 that is attracting so many people? Well, it's the thing I mentioned in my first paragraph....WORLDWIDE online racing, absolutely brilliant net code, and a mature, wonderful online community.

I am really hoping PD steps up their ballgame with the online feature. If Namco did it with the launch of the PS3, there is no reason why PD can't.

I really wish PD would have at least played and studied RR7 so that they could see how online is supposed to be done. But from what I've heard Kaz is pretty stubborn and refuses to even look at other racing games.

I think that is the main problem with PD. They will not see what works beautifully for other developers. They may not know about all the useful scoreboard features some games have, or how to have lag free 16 player online races, or the huge amount of host options players should have in a private lobby.

The only good thing about PD not looking into what already works great is that the experience they give us will be a new one. Hopefully the full game will have a online experience better that the Sega Dreamcast one that GT5P currently offers.

Sorry for my bad English.

Good explanation, Isamu and Chadspeed!

Who knows GTR2, RACE07, GTL, rFactor in MULTIPLAYER, the the GT5p online race is a joke.

I take it your saying that those other games are better online than GT5P. I would have to add most other racing games that are online ARE better than GT5P, as far as options.

Easy way to find out... I'm in the US playing a JPN version of GT5P. If someone with an EU version in the EU goes on the arcade time-trial leaderboards for the Tuned Vette, '60 Vette or '76 Ferrari at London and sees me in the list (towards the top, LOL ;) ), we know we've got global leaderboards. Anyone care to try?

EU prologue,unimental 2nd in London,Tuned Corvette,driven today.
We'r global.

Sweet, thanks for the effort guys.:sly:

Bingo. You win.

Short answer: Buy the copy designed for your country, or the nearest applicable. You'll get much better online play that way. It's your own fault you imported out of impatience anyway!

Well so far we know the leaderboards are global. The racing may be, but can't know for sure until we get private lobbies. Many other games are global, so PD's only excuse is that they will not look to see what is already working for other developers like Namco and Turn10, they choose to learn from scratch, we pay the price in lag an lack of options. I'm sure they will have learned enough to make the full GT5 much better online than GT5P is.

Also, there's a difference in how games handle lag. Ridge Racer has been known to handle lag and packet loss very gracefully. GT5P's handling of it is not quite as good or sophisticated but that does not mean inherently more or less latency/packet loss.

When you're playing across multiple countries, there will always be latency and dropped packets. That is just a plain old fact of life, period. No ifs ands or buts. Ridge Racer is very capable of making it APPEAR that there is none because it handles things with predictive action and all kinds of other techniques developed specifically to handle this. Also Ridge Racer is NOT a simulation and does NOT have to be as precise as GT5P is going to have to be. One is an arcade racer, the other more a simulator. RR requires less accuracy and thus can kind of "ad-lib" when packets do get dropped or lag spikes happen.

I find it funny you talk about Polyphony Digital's resource allocation. They should be doing this and that. They should examine Namco's online games. It's just GT4 online code that's been tweaked. Yadda yadda. Do you have any proof of any of this, or that they haven't done some homework? Just because you play in Japan from the UK or US and have a crappy connection? Big surprise.

You can't just pick up a game and go, "this online system is great! let's take it and go!" they'd get sued into oblivion. So thus, their own coding is what they are going on and that is what they are refining. This is a prologue for a reason. I don't know if you program anything but you ought to know it takes a very, very long time by very talented people for simulators.

I just don't understand people who wait at all. But, OK, that's just me and all those who import.
Anyway, my friend told me that alot of strange stuff happens in his PAL version, but he is racing against alot of people. I, with the jp bd am not racing against alot of people, but I got a god connection. But this says nothing. Maybe my internet connection is faster. I am playing wirelessly btw. Lately about 1 in every 40 races something goes wrong. Which is acceptable. Sometimes I am racing with one other person and he probably drops out while the race is starting. That might just explain the outage. A bug no less, mind you.
As for the comment that global time trails can be shared that is not too say that you can be racing your next door neigbour at all.
Sharing the time trail data is easy, but like DrTrouserPlank said, I think every region is seperated. I guess when I race in the daytime I will not see any Japanese players, because they will be asleep!
My friend also saw a really funny name in the pal version online: Ikeaboy. There's a name you won't forget fast!
