Is there no online levelling system , or am I missing something?
In pretty much every game now you have an online level / ranking that is separate to the offline game.
That is how you earn your bragging rights and how matchmaking is done so you face up against people of a similar level.
Is the only reward for winning an online race the brief moment of triumph over a set of strangers?
