Well, I'm about to finish all the races possible in the offline mode, A-spec, B-spec, endurance, and all. That only leaves the online section of the game.

Unfortunately, I finished all the online Seasonals also. They were fun, but I would like a bit more of a challenge so it's online to lobbies I go.

So what I need to know is the information people who play there all the time already know.

1. What exactly is the difference between "clean" and "dirty" racing? Not just ramming people or whatever. What are the grey areas on this? I'd rather be considered one of the "clean" racers so I would like to err on the side of caution.

Do you consider a person who swoops in to take the inside lane forcing you to back off a "dirty" racer or do you always want people to pass in straights and outsides?

Is even a touch considered bad taste?

It's the technical stuff I need to know. I'm not a horrid driver, but not the greatest by any means. I would like to not piss people off on accident when I go online. It's one thing to "love nudge" the computer, it's another to anger people you'll be playing with for a while.

Those were my biggest questions and I'm sure I'll have more. Love to know what people can offer before I dive in though.

Mic preferred btw? Don't have one, but I might consider getting one if it's expected in some of the mature crowds. I'm an older player so I'd rather have a good group to play with instead of kiddies.

Any suggestions would be great.

Check the GTP OLR for more info. Give me a minute and I'll find you a link.

I'm only drunk when I'm not sober.

'twas a woman that drove me to drink... And I didn't even have the decency to thank her.

PS, I'm drunk right now

Haha me too!!

The original quote is actually:

A woman drove me to drink and I didn't even have the decency to thank her.
W. C. Fields

I prefer the bastardisation:

It was a woman who drove me to drink and I didn't have the good sense to thank her

It varies massively lobby to lobby, but to be on the absoloute safe side you should always have at least two wheels on the track, avoid bumps at all cost and wait for other racers to go past when re-joining the track. Obviously, there will be times when you slightly cut a corner or bump someone, but be sure to apologise after the race and you'll keep your good reputation

Do you consider a person who swoops in to take the inside lane forcing you to back off a "dirty" racer or do you always want people to pass in straights and outsides?
Diving through the inside is a very common cause of accident's, as the higher speed of the passing car can cause it to understeer into it's opponent. Depending on the circumstance and lobby, it may be acceptable but as a rule, I don't do it and dislike when others do it to me.

Is even a touch considered bad taste?
I personally avoid contact at all cost, even to the point of going off track deliberately to make sure i don't ruin someone else's race, but this is not entirely neccesary. As long as you don't knock your opponent off line it's usually forgiven after a simple apology post-race.

Mic preferred btw? Don't have one, but I might consider getting one if it's expected in some of the mature crowds.
Not neccesary but encouraged, the text chat is really useful but it can get annoying when it blocks "Tsukuba" or "Engine" in a three sentence message...

I'm an older player so I'd rather have a good group to play with instead of kiddies.
If you filter by "Race for real" and read the title of the lobby it isn't too hard to avoid inexperienced gamers. If you look for lobbies running sports tyres, no boost, low slipstream, real track grip, tyre wear on and penaltys on you should have consistently clean races with mature opponents.

Any suggestions would be great.
Look through the OLR that shem posted earlier, it's a really good refference 👍

I would also have a look through the clubs. I joined one about 3 months ago and it is by far the best racing you will get.... particulary if you join one that has your values. Those that bother to join clubs are usually more serious and professional when racing.....

Agree with all points above also!

It's just like offline racing except you need to be mindful of other people on track. Be aware of where all the cars around you are, and don't use the car in front as brakes.

When you're racing in similar cars you'll often find yourself side by side heading towards a corner.
Clean racers both drive around the corner without hitting each other, sacrificing some speed, or one car will ease off enough to get behind the car on the racing line and try passing again. Whatever works best.
Dirty racers both go for the apex at the same time and the guy on the inside pushes the outside guy into the gravel.

All it takes is one good race against a human and you'll probably never want to race alone again.

Join a club, seriously!

Great, that's all pretty helpful. Now hopefully I don't suck bad enough to be considered one of the dirty racers on accident. lol I like my beer late at night also and my driving gets worse as the nigh goes by.

Oh yeah, one last thing. What kind of times are considered decent for tracks? Is there a compiled list somewhere for example or are the Season Time Trials a good indicator. I can gold those easy enough, but I hope I'm not expected to have times like those in the top 10 of those trials. I can't even get close to those. I got in the top 10 once and that was because I caught the trial at the beginning. lol

Me and a friend run BST V8 challenge(link below) and we are a good bunch of clean drivers as we trust eachother to play clean, and they all are.

We have a lot of older drivers in our series 30s,40s even a 54yr old we have only a handful of youngsters which are very clean.

Series 2 is nearly over but series 3 will be out very soon for signup, we also give tickets for prizes and driver of the day.
Take a look and let me know as I think it might be up your street.

Be careful of online lobbies stating "Free Run, No rules" especially in Top Gear Test Track. There's most likely some kiddie there running around hitting everyone. Best to avoid these, and happy racing! 👍
