I think PD really did a wonderful job with the online system in GT5. It's feature rich and has a myriad of options available. I'm not a 'traditional" GT player. Prologue was the first GT game I played. I'm not a big fan of grinding away in career mode. For me, racing against the AI is just a waste of time. Racing online against human opponents is where the REAL action is to be found. This past weekend, I put an online race together for some of my friends who used to have regular race meets with Supercar Challenge.
We tried to push things by having a full lobby with slower cars that would race bumper to bumper at Monza for 20 laps with changing weather conditions. The results were very pleasing. Nobody was dropped from the lobby, for the most part, the race was lag free, even though we had people racing from the US, Canada, Western Europe, Central Europe, Denmark, the UK and Ireland. Voice coms, as expected, fall flat when more than 8 people are using them at the same time but I think that's just the reality of the situation.
PD did so many things right with their concept of online racing. But it does need some tweaking.
- Perhaps it's my lack of vision but I don't understand how people can enter "your" lounge when you're not there. In my opinion, when the 'owner' of the lounge enters, he or she should automatically take over as host. It's kind of ridiculous to kick everybody out just so you can take over hosting duties.
- I wish we had the ability to restrict certain options so that only the host can change them. For example, if I as the host decide to mandate no racing line or a particular car or number of laps, it makes no sense that anybody in the lobby can go and change it back. There should at least be a toggle (like there is for track selection) for the host only to pick or that anybody in the lobby can pick.
- I REALLY wish only the host had the power to 'start' the race. When running more serious events, you can organize a qualifying sessions by having everybody run free laps and setting the race start by "fastest first". What a great system! 👍 But it only works until some nit wit decides after 10 seconds that he's had enough and selects to start the race. 👎 It should at least be an option that only the host has this ability.
- The car selection. Being able to choose any of your favorites or any of the cars available in arcade mode is great. And they make good use of the filters. But I hope at some point in a future patch, PD will work out some sort of speed rating for the cars. I don't want some sort of artificial leveling system like Prologue. I like being able to 'tune' the cars in a more realistic way. But we need some sort of rating system where we can say, this car with these installed mods, has a speed rating of X and this car with these tires and this grear box and stage 2 weight reduction has a speed rating of Y. Otherwise it will be nearly impossible to have 'level' racing unless you take stock cars with no mods. In the race we put together, I left the option open for the VW GTI, Renault Megane or Lancia Delta. The Delta, in stock form, ended up being about 3 seconds per lap slower, all things being equal. In the end, if you're going to have competitive online racing you need to be able to tell how the cars will stack up against each other. And the lobby could have an option of "Maximum Speed Rating". I realize working out speed ratings for a thousand cars and endless possible mods is daunting. But surely they can work out some sort of basic formula and apply a number next to the car.
- I love the pit stops. I think they're prefect as they are. Aside from the glitch when using the G25/G25 with H-pattern shifter, it works well.
- Tire wear, tire temperature and fuel consumption all seems to work well and it was clear when racing against somebody with older tires that their car suffers in comparison. 👍 Likewise (visual) damage is well implemented and clearly evident. I'm also pleased how the changes are variable and evolving on a drying track. Some sections are still wet, others are drying, in some places one side of the track is wet and the other side dry. It makes for a very challenging experience. Well done.
- I wish I could say the same for the draft. It's still ridiculously over done.
I know PD is probably trying to make the race more interesting but come on.
- The end of the race timer. The SINGLE worst idea that PD ever came up with was to make the race end 30 seconds after the leader crosses the line. Good God!
I understand why it's there. You cant have somebody stuck on the track forever doing donuts while others are waiting to start another race. But during the event we had, a 20 lap race, there were great battles going on for 12 & 13 and 7 & 8 that were ruined when the the timer stopped. This 30 second time simply MUST GO! Change it to at least 3 minutes--maybe 5 minutes. 30 seconds was an artificial number during Prologue's player matching days. Get rid of it. PLEASE.
- The race replay. I can level enough kudos on this feature. In a lobby with 14 people racing for 20 laps, the file was 77MB!
But it recorded all of it. And watching it after, being able to see the race from the perspective of any car is so exciting I just can't stop smiling. That is until I realized I just missed something, 30 minutes into the replay and realize there's no rewind button. And no fast forward. The MUST change this. None-the-less being able to enter photo mode and look at racing incidents by walking around both cars is a feature which is so good, it must be experienced first hand to truly appreciate how good it is. Absolutely fantastic. 👍
- I'm also very impressed by the live timing feature of the replay (a sample from our race is below)
Wow. Just look at it. You have the participants, the cars they drove, fastest lap, individual laps, last lap, sector times, gaps!
Who could want more? Ahh, well... 💡 Here's one. How about we have access to all of this information at the end of the race from the results screen? Why isn't it there. Why do we have to save the replay, watch the whole replay (almost in hour in this case) just to see the race telemetry? How does this make any sense?
In general, I'm very pleased with what PD have given us. And I think most of what I'm asking for is basic and requires just a little tweaking as opposed to massive under the skin changes. Needless to say, this thread is a little to big to put in a tweet to Kazunori.
Are there any missing features or additional changes others would like to see?
