Is anyone else frustrated that despite Polyphony's and Sony's best efforts, the online racing is slowly turning as bad as it was in GT6? Dirty racing and the penalty algorithims are constantly misapplied. I'm about ready to give up but looking for suggestions to help make the online racing more enjoyable.

Complaints as well as solutions are welcome. :)

Your mindset is what has the biggest influence on your experience. If you have the mindset that you are going to avoid causing or being caught up in incidents that get you penalised, and you know how to do so, then you can minimise the amount of unfair penalties that you are given. Personally, I don't drive aggressively in attack or defense until the last third of a race, and only go for overtakes early in a race if a clear opportunity comes up; otherwise, I stay behind the guy ahead and save fuel until I get past.

As for dirty racing itself, I don't see a lot of it at SR S. You can't control what other people do, but you don't need to fight fire with fire. Keep calm and let dirty drivers do their thing; most of the time, they lose SR and get penalties and ruin their own race, or end up driving themselves off the track; if not, then big deal, you just got unlucky this time. Focus on getting to SR S, and once you're there, find out for yourself how aggressively you can drive without dropping your rank.

For the few seconds in a race that you might lose due to a BS penalty, you can more than make up by keeping yourself on the track and simply minding your own business. And remember, everyone else is playing by the exact same rules.

Stop racing in Sport Mode, & start racing in lobbies; but find a host who turns penalties OFF. There are plenty of good private clubs on here.

If by rules you mean that random number generator that PD calls a penalty system, then yes everyone gets hit by unfair penalties. GT Sport is like playing the slot machines, yet you can choose not to go near cars and wait for the ones that dare to race take each other out :)

Over time you learn to recognize which players you need to stay away from and who you can have a good race with. It's not that different from lobby racing. It takes time to recognize the different styles and when to step out of a battle to fight another day.

And sometimes there's just nothing you can do, for example just now:

The penalty system will screw you, red S for that race for getting hit from behind. The cleaner you drive the more unfair penalties you will get percentage wise. Shrug it off and move on. Use the report button when you see someone deliberately punting or pushing people off.

One comfort, once you have the speed and know a track really well, getting bumped down from SR 99 usually means good win opportunities thanks to the dodgy matchmaking. Keep practicing!
