I think VBR's observation has just confirmed my worst fear - Ive been tuning my cars up to the PP limit instead of maxing them out and using the power limiter. I honestly think this has been the main problem!

Im going to test that theory right now by using the power limiter and see if i notice any difference!

I'd be interested to find out what your lap times were before & after, that is; your best lap with your current tune & then one with the maxed out tune plus power limiter,

One of the problems is using a "recommended" tune..
I have tested various tunes before in GT5 from "big name" tuners on this sight and the set-ups are nearly all a joke.
Best thing to do is read a guide on each aspect of suspension settings and do your own tune that actually works.
Also a tip on PP limits.
Most people will lower weight to the lowest when the vehicle in question could be better of with out weight reduction and have more power instead. At 500pp hardly any of my cars have weight reductions....But the same can be said of a really heavy high powered car...Stripping weight would give the biggest benefit...All about balance and testing.

Or, what you can do is use the upgrades to remove weight. Then redistribute the weight for a better balance using ballast.

I always thought it was just me as everyone seems to rave about them !
Every tune i try from here either feels very weird or slower than just lowering ride height a bit (my default tune lol) which seems to work 9/10.

Honestly, those tunes out there, I appreciate the tuners for their hard work and efforts of course, but I mean everyone drives differently. When someone asks for a tune for a car, you can't just go out and make one, you have to know the person's driving style, are they aggressive? Understeer or oversteer is manageable? How good are the cornering speeds, how twitchy or smooth is your steering? Even then its still not a surefire, the best tailor for that suit is yourself.

Online racing is a class above obviously, or sometimes a class below, but you just got to keep going at it, there isn't a scorecard to remind you of your wins and losses so its okay to lose. Everyone has lost, its just the motivation to say "I suck, let me go run the Nordschleife 5 times straight to get it down" is what makes people improve.

Further to what V4.SKUNK said; at certain PP levels, some cars like the Elise 111R are actually faster if you add as much weight as possible as you get a significantly better power to weight ratiio!

A few games back, every tune I saw was based around racing soft tires. I gave up on that. I use racing slicks on race cars, and try to limit to sport hard at most on anything else. Throwing more sticky rubber at the problem will make anything faster, doesn't really seem like tuning to me. Is that still the case?

Regarding weight reduction, in the early days (GT1, 2? Can't remember) weight reduction seemed to ruin the balance of the car and ballast never fixed it, so we gave up on that. Since the introduction of interiors (saints be praised!) I don't bother with more than stage 1 because going all out should be leaving it an empty metal shell, but it has no impact on what you see, so that is jarring.

One thing I will add to the advice above is to always take a close look at the regulations chosen by the lobby host. I often have joined rooms which the title is for example '500pp sports', only to find the pp limit is actually 509.

Also make sure that they could be using nitrous, have SRF enabled, or even be using better tires than you are.
