Hello,

I have been playing GT5 for a while, but I just don't understand why people race online in the open lobby. I mean, there is no online rankings or anything, so I don't get the point. Is there something I'm missing? I'm hoping someone can explain this to me.

Thanks so much!

It just adds a new level of competition, fun, and racing.

A free online mode have a pretty obvious reason to exist honestly, not everyone can/want to compete in organized leagues.
Ranking? The final result of the race, just that.

It's about the hunt, not the win. Race me and I'll show you.

The answer to "why do people race online"? is the same as the answer to the question, "why do people race?" or "why do people climb mountains?" or" why do people run marathons?" etc. There are many answers to all of those questions, unique to the individual doing the answering. The fact that an answer does not easily come to you, probably indicates that online racing isn't for you.

Agreed with the post above, and what does a online ranking get you in the end? If you want a real reason gt academy beat that and you actually win a life changing experience, which is a lot better then a leader board position.

You gain A-Spec XP and money! Its a nice change of pace from driving with the same AI over and over.

Along with the other replies, you might want to add the social aspect of it. It's a good place to drive and chat with other drivers. A great place for enthusiasts, if you're with the right people.

A perfect way to compete against real people and find like minded racers to have an enjoyable time competing against.

Oh my god now you meantion it yeah there's no leaderbroards, I've been wasting my life! anyone wanna buy a ps3? hardly used lol

Online rankings have the potential to completely revoloutionize the online racing part of GT5. Outside of organized series and private groups, open lobby online racing is almost completely non-existant in GT5 nowadays. How many times have we heard, over and over ad nauseum, that public lobbies are smash up derby's, free for alls etc?. If we had a workable system we could have a ranking system for drivers as far as accidents go, speed, wins, average finishes etc. If you could then take one or more of those factors and use it to set up your own race lobby, you could potentially exclude all the jokers that want to run around in X1's crashing into people and driving backwards.

Say for example there was a system that ranked the number of times you made contact or caused a shunt. Someone who never makes contact might be a 100. Someone who makes contact on average twice per lap might be a 0 and everyone else in between based on some algorithm or something. So maybe I could set up a lobby and only allow people with a ranking of 50 or better to enter and race. No more crashers and bashers.

You might also have a standard driving test, like the AMG Academy, that anyone can take and earn a ranking as a driver, say gold, silver and bronze. I could set up my lobby for only gold drivers, or leave it open for all levels of drivers. Or maybe I'm an average driver and want to race against other drivers of the same calibre so I set it to silver only.

There are numerous ways you could sort through drivers to make a better experience for everyone, but PD has chosen to just leave things wide open and as a result, after 18 months almost no one is actually racing in street cars in public lobbies.

Ummm. Because it's fun. :dopey:

For the most part, this may be true. But the SNAIL group has practices on Wednesday. We have those practices in public rooms to attract more people to the main event on Sunday. We don't stick to street cars, but we do use them primarily. This week is something of an exception. We have both a Lotus RM and a racing liveried Corvette in this week's line-up. The third car is the ACR SRT10.

Normally, we have cars that are more fun to drive, and tend to only have sports tires. Last week it was the Lotus RM, the Focus ST, and an 80's Supra.

I host nightly with stock street cars.

people race online because they want a good challenge. the AI sucks. they can be driving minolta's and you could beat them in a veyron. it gets boring after awhile, so aside from farming cash from the seasonals, people race online for the challenge.
