EDIT: I personally think online trophies are stupid and I am glad to see that Dirt 2 only has like 4 or 5 of them. And there are a bunch of games (mostly FPS) that have like 4 or 5 offline trophies and the rest are all online. But, I mean, when I go online to play a game, I'm not looking to get trophies usually. Online Trophies and achievements also promote cheating. I mean, like with Halo 3, there was a couple string killing achievements and I went into Forge and literally created a map that had a chain gun aimed at a single respawn point that was set basically to instant respawn. I tested it and easily got the maximum kill chain awards.

But yeah Online Trophies suck noodles. Especially when you don't have an online connection.

What I find more troubling about online trophies is that online servers don't stay up forever, meaning they are lost for good when the servers do go down.

Totally agree with this. Also to me online trophies or just requirements are sometimes ridiculous difficult. (regarding killzone 2 for example)

example: Valor Grand Cross - Gold
Achieve weekly online honor rank #4 This means that during one single week you need to be one of the top 1% of all the players during that week. say that there is 500.000 playing, you need to be ranked at least 5.000 at the end of the week.

Then its just about time consuming (extreme amounts of time) and not really about the game anymore.

I forgot about the evilly hard online ones. I think there was one for PGR 4 that was like "have a photo ranked #1 for x number of weeks". Those ones are the worst. When they're hard or online, I know I sometimes will just ignore them, especially if they're hard. I know my brother does this as well. He'll actually go through the game trophies and pick out the ones he doesn't mind getting and which one's he just won't even bother with.

Edit: I think that Trophies should be accompanied with unlockable items. Like for a racing game you could have Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum liveries for completing all of that color. Or like say there's a "roll over and still win" trophy. If you complete it, you could unlock a stunt arena or something. Or a track editor for cutting the track or something." Maybe if you have one that's like "start in last and finish first" you could unlock an "AI Intelligence editor" that would allow you to essentially adjust the difficulty of the AI drivers from "Rocket Scientist" that never makes a mistake and takes every corner at the optimal speed, to "Look the Dog is driving" that swerves wildly all over the track. *yeah, just an idea i had*

The ones that bother me most are ones in sports games. I really couldn't care less about playing a lot of online games, and it takes way too much organization for ones that require you to be part of a league. They really should make them separate entities. Have a normal amount of offline trophies with a platinum, and if they want, have a group of online ones that don't count towards the platinum or have a separate platinum that is worth less in the leveling system. I'm by no means a trophy whore, but I do enjoy getting ones that can be obtained with a reasonable amount of extra effort.

Same here. That was the fun part. Like Rockstar has some very creative ones. like "find all the Rockstar barrels" in Midnight Club LA. It's a hard one, but it's also fun 'cause it encourages exploration.

And GT5 is looking to be the first game, or at least the first racing game, to have multiple platinum trophies. Perhaps one of those will be and Online platinum.

My name is Roh, and I'm a trophy addict! 19 platinums!!:boggled: Yeah I know.

Recently I just cant be bothered. I always saw it as a nice way to get your moneys worth, now its just a hastle. I dont have the time these days, well, rather I dont have the inclination to go trophy hunting. I play games for fun, and if they stop being fun, i stop playing them. Trophies make you play more than you probably would of in general, but online trophies test your metal against real people. Beating the actual game is more often than not ridiculously easy, so if you're bothered, online trophies are a real badge of honour. Obviously its only an accolade amongst trophy lovers, but nice to have if you can get them.

And dont forget that its actually sony who made trophies mandatory. Its left game developers having to create trophies out of situations that otherwise wouldnt of been there. Also, no one releases a game thinking it'll be worth 5 hours of our lives before it hits the trade in desk. Most of the difficult trophies are time consuming, I guess anyone who makes a game believes you'll be playing it forever. Is this going to be a problem with GT5!? Most of us will be playing it for years! Not hours. I could of platinumed COD4 and Prologue multiple times by now, but I still go back time and again because they're truely worth my time.

You mentioned Killzone 2. I have platinum for that. When it came out I thought it was amazing. Epic! I absolutely loved it, so any time i put a FPS into my machine, it was that one. The platinum didnt come easy either, just playing all the time wasnt enough, and when I finally got that platinum!!! Wow the satisfaction. I 100% beat that game! A game I loved!

I think the trouble is there's just so many games being churned out at the moment. Its hard as a gamer to pick the right ones every time. In the end it means I buy mostly everything and become dissapointed with gaming itself. Including everything that goes with it, like trophies. I like to pick and choose now. Sometimes I make a bad purchase, but the games I enjoy I couldnt care less about their trophies. I had BFBC2 for a while before I went back to COD4. There was one trophy I had left to get before the platinum. Didnt get it, because it wasnt about testing my skill on the battlefield, it was about pandering to a certain criteria and wasting my time.

In short ( too late!) I like online trophies. If they're testing my skill thats fine, I'll race a thousand races before I win 10! If they're stupid made up time wasters, then the platinum trophy can go wanting!

GT5 will likely be the only game i 100% dont mind for time consuming trophies though :P but all other games can not keep me entertaint long enough...

Killzone2 indeed epic, online also epic. Best shooter for me so far.

I agree on the point that trophies that require skill are good (yet the sico trophy in wipeout is rather difficult :P) and time wasters without skill are useless (do i hear midnight club 5000km ?). Still would be nice if DLC/Online was split from the Offline bit.

And that's all because of Microsoft with their Achievements. They were there for how long before Sony introduced Trophies. Does it create a situation for exclusives...possibly, but I wouldn't put it down to Sony making it mandatory because so many games are multi-plat. The devs would still make those decisions on what should be an Achievement, and they'd still be just as ridiculous.

It depends, I don't mind the "achieve this rank" or "win # of games" as they can be a good challenge but at the same time aren't to out of reach. However I do have a dislike of the ones that require you to be at a certain place on the leaderboard or don't give you options. For instance I didn't even attempt to do the online trophies for Red Dead Redemption as they all had to be done in public lobbies which are horrible and ruin the online section of that game.
