Hi guys. I currently have a Saxo 1.1 which I love. It drives great and is really low mileage. But it is the base model and I find the engine is gutless going uphill (especially with a passenger/full tank) and makes a racket on the motorway at 70.
Now in an ideal world I'd like something like an MX5/MR2 or a Hyundai Coupe, but insurance is too high, and most hatchbacks in my price range are boring looking low spec models.

However I have found a Satria Neo that looks fantastic, but some reviews say it's gutless and not worth looking at, while others say it's great.

Should I go for it, or stick with the Saxo for a bit longer?

Going for a test drive is probably the best answer I can give. Everyone's view on a car is different, but ultimately it's what you think of it that matters most of all.

As @INEEDNAWZZZ says, a test drive is the only real way of figuring out whether it's right for you.

However... professional car reviewers tend to know what they're talking about. Reviews saying the car is great probably aren't from people paid to test different cars for a living - they'll be from people who actually own the car and may not have driven a single other vehicle in their lives.

I can't claim to have driven the Satria Neo myself, but it was thoroughly uncompetitive when brand new, so won't have improved with time.

What's your budget? We might be able to suggest an alternative, perhaps one you'd not considered, if we have a few more details.

The only Proton I'd really go anywhere near let alone actually own is the Satria GTi.

I haven't driven a Satria Neo granted but if it's anything like Proton's recent offerings it's not exactly a quality vehicle for the money.

As for typical alternatives, unfortunately I don't know the market over there though I do know a little about the insurance rates. The point is though that I can't really help in that respect.

Thanks guys. My budget is around £2500- £3000, but as I'm 20 atm (nearly 21) cheapish insurance is a must (the Saxo renewal quote is £960 odd).

I'd run a bunch of quotes on a comparison site to see what you can get for different cars.

The Saxo may only be a 1.1, but insurance companies will take lots of other factors into account for the renewal. Saxos aren't only the sort of car that's likely to be involved in an accident - since most drivers are young - but they're not particularly safe either. If an insurance company has to pay out more for claims involving a Saxo, since the risk of injury or death is higher, then insurance costs will be too.

The point I'm making is that you may well be able to get something faster and more interesting that's cheaper to insure simply because the risk for insurers is lower.

£2500-3000 should get something fairly reasonable too. Have you actually run quotes on MX-5s/MR2s/Hyundai Coupes, or are you just guessing that they'll be expensive because of your age?

I'm not sure I could recommend a Hyundai Coupe to anybody either :S

And if there's nothing wrong with the Saxo there's no harm in you keeping it for a by longer and saving up a by more money (assuming you're working and not in education)

I am working so saving is not a problem. I found a cheap quote on a Hyundai (half the price of the last quote I got) but Mx5s and MR2s are a complete no go atm it seems. I did get a quote on a Triumph Spitfire for £600 though!

I think I'll test drive the Proton and Hyundai just to see what their like, but as you say, there's no harm saving for something better!
