So I just got the game and when I start it up I name the characters and everything and I play for about 5-10 min and then the game just cuts to the blue screen. I tried cleaning the cart and the system but no luck so I thought maybe I need to replace the battery in the cart? If anyone knows it would be a big help

Let me ask you this, what region are you in and what region is the cart? By region I mean NSTC-J, NSTC-U/C, or PAL.

Then your problem is more simplistic. It is the save battery, or in those days, a suicide battery. These little buggers power the memory in the cart so that your save data isn't corrupted. They earn the name "suicide battery" because Capcom when developing the CPS-2 arcade system, put them in to power the memory of the "A" board, however, when the battery goes out, the entire system fails. Enter a call to Capcom.

Nintendo's battery is a little more simplistic to replace compared to the CPS-2 boards. All you need is a proper screwdriver to take apart the shell. Then you will get something like this:

Carefully take out the battery. Notice the size on the Duracell package? Go to your nearest battery shop and buy the equivalent size battery and replace.

You can save immediately (beeline for the inn and drop 30 gil), so you could always try restarting the game after that and see if it holds the data, before buying a battery or opening anything up.

More commonly in my experience, random cutouts are a result of poor contact seating, either because of the console or the cartridge. Just walking in the same room could jar it enough to lose what it's doing. I'm not sure how to resolve that.

EDIT: So if the battery doesn't work, that could be it.
