My parents received their new Prius today! Brand spanking-new 59-reg with 6 miles on the clock.

Our previous car (the Qashqai) has some problems that Nissan are struggling or not bothering to sort out. Long story short, it's engine problems - gearbox getting worse, major ECU problems. There's been ECU firmware updates but they've screwed them up and it still has a few issues, so my dad is frankly getting a bit annoyed with them.

But in comes the... Prius! Excuse the crummy photos...

I mean, I don't drive it, but it's actually more car like than you actually realise. It's comfortable, looks a lot better inside than the older one, very roomy, speakers and stero are very good, lots of little storage spots, clear and easy to use buttons and controls. Reasonably powerful too - 1.8 assisted by the electric motors - near 140bhp.

The oddest thing about the car though is the way it drives... the apparent feeling that the car is just rolling forwards without any control because the petrol motor isn't on. You get the occasional buzzing from the electric motors powering the air con (which is amazing - it blows ice-cool air within a few seconds) but otherwise it's silent. All you do, since it's keyless entry, is put your foot on the brake and press the power on button, and you're away. There's no ignition.

The car is pretty comfortable and quite quiet too. I presume I've been used to diesels for a while not but petrol motors are so much quieter and smoother... It's odd there's no gearchanges either because it's a CVT transmission.

There's lots of different display modes showing how economically you're driving and your MPG average over specific amount of times (we managed 58mpg so far apparently). And of course the screen showing you when the petrol and electric motors are being used or charged. This stuff can be shown on the windshield head-up display too which only the driver can see. It's definitely a boy's toy. :p

There's 3 modes. EV mode uses the electric motor only up to 31 mph, but you have to accelerate quite slowly to stop it from deactivating itself. Pulling out onto a busy road you will need to accelerate enough to deactivate it so it's a little pointless, especially since it uses only battery anyway no matter what mode you are in cruising at low speeds, and you can only use the battery for about a mile and a half before the petrol motor kicks in anyway to charge it. Power and Eco modes just increases and decreases the throttle response sigificantly.

Not sure what else to say really. The guys at Toyota are pretty much the nicest bunch of car salesmen I've ever met. Oh, and there's a tiny bright light on the ceiling that shines on the gearlever at night so you can see it. Random little touches! :p

Looks neat. Even though some people may hate Priuses or any other car, i always appreciate a new car. It's so nice to be in one.

And having riden in the previous model Prius, i can also say that they are extremely comfortable. 👍

I've often found myself disagreeing with those who think the new Prius is a mess, as I quite like the way it looks compared to previous versions. And you're right, the interior is a lot better.

I'm still not in anyway a Prius fan but I'm glad you like the car 👍 I'm also glad you got rid of the Qashqai, bloody awful anonymous lumps of excrement, those things. I can't in any way see the appeal of them.

Weird, my dad rented a car for a business trip and they gave him a Prius (I think it was the previous gen though). He said it was a good car and got decent mipg. (he averaged 47.5)

His big complaint though was comfort, especially for a long trip. Terrible seats.

Yeah, the biggest gripe about the old car was the seats were pretty uncomfortable. Toyota seemed to have listened to the feedback and put it into the new gen - better fuel economy which is more achievable now it appears, much better seats, more power, better to drive (apparently), and quieter at a cruise. And definitely a more appealing interior.

The bigger motor is apparently for better economy - we averaged about 55 mpg on the motorway rather than around 45 in the previous gen car because the bigger motor doesn't have to work so hard.

as long as you're parents dont become the motoring stereotype where they drive around saying there saving the planet, then that car is cool.

We got a new one to replace a Camry fleet car at work, and while I didn't drive it, as a passenger it does have a weird feeling at the start, but it is pretty cool. The new model looks pretty nice on the outside too.

If the put the gauges in front of the driver I'd totally rock one. Though I fully appreciate and understand the centralised gauge cluster, and maybe I'd get use to it after a while...

Needs some 3S-GTE and Anti-Lag. Now.

Seriously, if you did that, you'd have one of the fastest FWD drag cars ever. That, and it's one in the eye for the green movement.

But, meh, if y'all are happy with it...well, I guess we can't rag too much. ;3

Aha nah they're not.

They just genuinly like it. Okay, it's around £2k more than a normal family saloon similarly specced, but once you've added an auto gearbox option a saloon, put into account you'll have to pay road tax (Prius has no road tax over here), and the Prius seems to have less expensive insurance even though it's a few groups higher than the Qashqai it nearly pays for itself. Plus the fuel economy is what really sealed the deal - without all this it would have been harder to justify.

As much as I dislike the Prius for fairly apparent reasons, anything has to be better than the Qashback or QuickBrew or whatever it is. Just FYI, the authentically French and stupidly discounted C4 has had absolutely no problems since new, so I'm not impressed by Nissan's attempts at reliability...

Anyway, congratsies and all that. Although you should have ordered a white one. ;)

Nice Car, those new Priuses look a lot better than the old models, the interior also looks very comfortable and I like the way the dash lights up

The white ones aren't available until December! We did want one until we heard about that waiting list.

I'm lost, what happened to the Civic!?
There wasn't anything wrong with the Civic, actually. My mum wanted a new car she liked and was more comfortable so we went for the Qashqai.

Your parents go through a lot of new cars now James

*Awaits the next one :D*

Aha tell me about it...

Although I am very confident now they won't for a looong time.

toyota thinks of all those little things (even with two worn out ones, those little touches are damn nice). besides, they had to do something withh the keyswitch illuminator light :P

@Prower: tell that to Honda, instead. mabey they'll dump the S2000's motor in the insight and use up them old things.

I watched Top Gear, and the hosted a test on which car uses the least amount of gas ...

The contestant were BMW M3 E90 and the Toyota Prius... Each car was filled with 1 gallon of fuel with 10 laps around the test track and guess what, the M3 is the winner !!! Is this true actually????

Well, Prius at 10/10ths will use more gas than M3 at...3/10ths, because it's being pushed far harder, and is at it's limits, while the M3 is nowhere near. You can't do a comparo that way. The comparo was purposely written this way to make the Prius seem bad. Not that it's particularly good, and definitely not the savior of the world, but it's not horrid, either. In fact, Clarkson himself said that the main thing is to change your driving style to save fuel.

Every other Magazine would argue otherwise. TG's written for entertainment, not particularly factuality.

I quite like the interior on the new models, the light shining on the gear lever is a nice touch (but pretty pointless, does anyone even look at theirs while changing gear? I should hope not) and the seats look comfortable but I really don't like the mass of buttons on there, all in black. It looks too cluttered in the center.

I also don't like the way they look from the outside or the general idea of them since you can get much better economy from a small diesel car and probably have more fun chucking it about too, if that's the sort of thing you're into.

I've not been inside one yet but it is very bizarre seeing one pull away without making a sound

Yeah I know he did said that change your driving style to save fuel...
