So I was in a private race (Forza 4) last night and suddenly the left paddle shifter started "sticking." It would shift OK but the initial movement was not smooth because of the sticking. I looked closely at where the paddle touches the wheel and could see a narrow strip of rubber on the back of the paddle that serves as a stop for the paddle when not in use. That strip of rubber had moved slightly and now the paddle was just missing the thin rubber strip and was hitting the glue that was used to attach the rubber strip to the back of the paddle. The paddle was hitting the glue and that's where the "sticking" was coming from.
I never liked the "long" throw of the paddle shifters as compared to the much shorter throw of my old Turbo S wheel. The micro-switch that the paddles engage is quite close to the top of the travel of the paddles but there is a lot of slack before you engage that switch.
To correct the sticking problem I first removed the rubber strip from the back of both paddles with a razor. I then took some automotive metal tape with an adhesive backing and started building up a replacement for the rubber stop with layers of metal tape. I used 8 layers to get the thickness I wanted and then stuck that in place of where the rubber stop had been.
So I fixed the sticking paddle shifter and at the same time took up some of the slack in the paddle travel to make it more like the throw of the Turbo S wheel. Very happy with the results.
