Panasonic NV-VZ1 videocamera. help needed a.s.a.p

I recently got a second hand Panasonic NV-VZ1, but have never had time to use it with tape or anything. So i got a media studies project to complete and need to use my camera but when i try to put tape into it, it shows up on the screen and then the camera screen goes blank.Am i doing something wrong? I need a quick fix because i have to film the stuff tomorrow and my cameras broken

Is the screen the only way to view what the camera is seeing? I'm not familiar with that particular make, but most cameras still feature a standard viewfinder.

Also, some cameras, especially those with viewfinders, will turn off the LCD screen by default to save batteries.. might be you just need to turn it back on.

nope, comes on, goes off 7 seconds later. The Zoom function, becomes the volume function. Wtf

This may sound a bit... simple, but are you sure it's in record and not playback mode? Because that would probably account for the zoom changing to volume control.
