Has anyone else got involved in Parkrun?

I'm approaching 50 runs myself and striving for a sub-20 time on a flat course (which my local is not!). Currently sit at 20:13 which I ran last year and started way too fast.

I figured we could have a thread to share progress and tips and encourage others to find their local event and answer any questions.

For those that haven't a clue what I'm on about, in Parkrun's own words...

parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.

And by that they literally mean free except for the cost of your running kit and printing off a barcode.

Events take place in places around the UK, Europe, North America and beyond.

I've been doing them for about 18 months now and since doing it I've joined a running club which prioritises Coffee and Cake over PBs and medals. They're a great bunch and it's the kind of support you receive at all Parkrun events because they're entirely inclusive. At our course we've had Olympic Triathletes running 15min records but also couch-to-5km runners that finish in 45mins+. Walkers are welcome too, all that is asked is that you give it a go!

I've no official association with Parkrun, but what spurred me to start the thread was because today I watched my first junior Parkrun, which is for U14s and is 2km long. Kids over 4yrs can attend, and they loved it. And I've never seen anything so inclusive and encouraging but also gives children the chance to push themselves to improve without detriment to the other kids.

There doesn't seem to be an entry for Slovakia but coincidentally my jog which I attempt do a few nights a week is about 4km. Takes me 22mins. I could increase that to 5km by extending the route but I don't feel fit enough to do so yet.

A quick calculation of Google maps shows that 3 laps of a park near me is 5km (x3 1.7km) so that could be an alternative.

I'd definitely be interested in doing it, but of course the Canadian events take place on the other side of the country. :p

That said, I know there are a ton of running clubs within Toronto, so I really should look into joining one. Running on my own has its limits, and with summer in full swing, I should get outside more.

I'd definitely try for 5km, it's a good distance to train at IMO. Also means when you are next back in the UK I'm sure you can find an event! Do you record your runs in anyway?

I'm genuinely surprised there isn't one in Toronto. Running clubs vary massively from the Athletic Clubs to the Couch-to-5km groups. It's worth trying a few club nights and see which has the best atmosphere.

First I've heard of this and there's one very close to me actually. I haven't ran since school days, though I do a fair bit of cycling so that may transfer over a little. I may check it out!

@NINE_HUNDRED - You certainly should. It'll probably take you a few runs to find your legs, but no doubt you have the fitness to put in some decent times.

“Everyone assumes there’s a catch,” says Daniel Whitehouse, a Parkrun volunteer run director and participant in Clermont, Fla., west of Orlando, one of a dozen Parkrun locations in the U.S. “And the catch is, you have to show up with your bar code. We want you to show up again, is the other catch.”
