Paul Newman as a Racer

I've been wanting to release this thread for about a year or so. This is the first in a series of two related threads. He's just about my grandmother's age. Maybe the most active 83-year old in sports or motorsports. More people know him for his acting rather than his racing (I know him for racing more than acting). If anyone wants to chat about Paul Newman in racing, feel free to drop some replies to this thread.

On an off-topic note, I wish him well as Paul Newman reportedly has terminal lung cancer. Reports say he's doing fine now, which is definitely good news. I know he raced during the 1970s and became associated with Nissans (I think he drove a couple of sportscars for them in the 1980s). Unlike many actors, he actually pursued automobile racing (James Dean excepted), and he was actually quite talented, considering that he was easily geting along with acting.

He may have funded some racing in the 1970s, too (there is a picture of a racing car bearing his name as a sponsor in an issue of Vintage Motorsport, Fall 2007).

Other than that, I don't know much, but I know enough to consider him a genuine talent on and off the track.
