For those of you who don't know, Paul Tibbets was the pilot of the Enola Gay. He was 92.

Translated France2.fr page Here

While what he, his crew, and the researcher did is hotly debated day in and day out, he will still be missed.

Even with me being Japanese, I understand that he was a soldier, and he was doing his job. May his soul rest in peace.

P.S. Boy, that link nearly killed my computer, whatever it was. :scared:

Even if you don't agree with what happened, can't see how you can blame someone following orders.

This is unfortunate as it comes at a time when I was having a detailed read through about the event that put an end the war. And all of a sudden the pilot of the very Enola Gay passes. He'll be missed. By most.

How can he be blamed? As far as I know, he and his crew didn't know what he was carrying. Or am I wrong about that?

When they were training for the mission, they had no idea. I think it was the night before the mission that they were told what the weapon was actually capable of.

I disagree. Killing civilians on purpose is disgusting. :irked:

But, anyway, I hope he will find peace after a life which must have had its fair share of torment. Poor guy.

They knew about it for a while, or at least some members of the crew did, as they were required to arm the bomb in flight. They knew what they were dropping.

It would of happened any way, if we were to go fight on land in Japan we would lose so many men, and the Japan would lose almost there whole population considering that even civilians would of been apart of the war. They were raised to fight to the last remaining person.

The bomb cut down on loses tremendously.

Baloney. The Air Force was already just off the coast and Japan was reeling. They could've flown in and bombed all of the military targets.

I'm not going to argue this one further, though. Paul Tibbets is dead, and so are a lot of other people. RIP.

Omnis, I don't agree with the bombings in any way. I said, I don't blame the pilots, they were only following orders.

Actually, I think Paul Tibbets took the bombing better than the pilot of the B-29 that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki. His name will follow...

May Tibbets rest in peace after a long life.

EDIT: Actually, I was wrong, but Paul Tibbets went under more fire from the Japanese in his life afterwards than the other B-29 pilot, Major Charles W. Sweeney, flying Bockscar.

Jump off a bridge. That's an order!

I'm not blaming the pilots, I feel sorry for them.

The first bombing has more justification, but the second one made no sense. 3 days!?

Anyways, I think "Do the ends justify the means" is a better place for the discussion this topic is headed to. :)

I never knew who it was who piloted the enola gay, it's too bad he died.

I say kudos to him though. Yea they knew what they were dropping, so what. August 6th 1945, my favorite day :D
