Anybody else play any of the above games?

I bought AoM and AoE 3 three or four years ago, but have just started playing them again now that my PS3 has RSoD'd.

I'm not very good, but I still enjoy them lol.
They can be a nice change from racing games every once and a while.

I've just started playing Age of Empires online.
Wondering if anybody else does?

I've thought about trying out AoE online, is it any good?

I'm a huge AoE/II/III fan, spent many hours playing them over the years (not that I'm any good strategically :P), II is probably my favorite though for the balance and time period and decent AI. III I've probably had the least fun with, too easy to win in that one, even on the hardest difficulties.

What kind of Unique methods do you use when you play? I'm usually playing as the Vikings, so I use Castles to form a perimeter around the areas I've taken hold of, and use those to spawn massive amounts of Beserks on the frontlines, kind of the most overpowered units in this game :dopey:

I played all of them growing up had all the expansions and such no idea where any of them went though. All I've found is the box for aoe2 gold.

I loved these games and spent hours on end playing them when I was younger. I also bought the StarWars version of it. I played AoE3 and wasn't too impressed. Wish I could find somewhere to download them for free though. I'm miss playing them.

Beserks overpowered? have you seen Longbowmen? I can beat 6 enemies on hard with 3 squads of 30 Elite Longbowmen, 5 monks and 5 Trebuchets. (one squad is defensive).

I loved AOE 2, untill the cd got scratched beyond recognition when a young relative thought it would make a good frisbee. I don't really enjoy 3 as much, even though it's the only one I have access to at the moment. Plus AOE 2 doesn't like Windows 7.

^
It works for me, but I was getting weird graphical and audio glitches (ground was in neon colours, and audio would sometimes cut out and in).

I used to play Age of Empires way back in the day with a dial up modem. Nothing like punching in your friends phone number to connect directly to their PC for some multiplayer gaming haha.

I also played a bit of AoE3 when it came out. Its definitely a fun game (in single player or multi with friends) and the extra dimension that the home city adds is pretty great. Playing that online with random people was much like playing warcraft3 or starcraft for me though... 3 minutes in and the opponent has an army bigger than any you'll ever build in any amount of time. No fun there.

That tends to be the same for me.
I guess the trick is to play games that have "no rushing" in the title.

AoE III is much better online.
Especially in team matches.
Being able to communicate with your teammate is really helpful and can create some really good matches.

Loved AoE II and played it loads on my old pc. Got very into it and worked out the stats for each unit, creating a set of 'Top Trumps' style cards for my nephew who was also into it. Never tried installing in on my Windows 7 pc, but now I've just got to find the disks and try it again!

From my observations Berserks were very average for special infantry. The Teutonic Knights equalled or bettered them in everything but speed - or so say my digital notes.

Haha!! Aoe 2 is just like GT2, it might be old, but its fun and it never dies! :D

I've been playing this game (off and on) since AoE II the Age of Kings came out for PC. Now I'm playing AoE II Gold on my Mac.

If I'm not mistaken, it's still considered the finest medieval castle strategy game. But if there's a better one, I'd like to know about it.👍

I only play the AI, and never online. I've perfected the strategy of winning 6 or 7 versus one (me) on Arena, Mediterranean and Islands. I'll try for all the relics, even to the extent of assaulting Castles and Monasteries to get them.

I'll usually play the Huns, since they play smoother without the hassle of building houses. But I also like Turks, Spanish, and Chinese.

Respectfully submitted,
Steve

^ You might want to try bumping the difficulty up a notch when starting a game. I believe "standard" is the second easiest, where I am now playing "hard", the second most difficult.

I was actually playing AoE II Gold earlier tonight, and loving it. It seems to be working just fine on Windows7 - the only issue being pink speckled water!?! Well, that and the fact that I am a bit rusty, so the English keep kicking my butt in the Joan of Ark campaigns.

Oh nifty, I'm glad to find someone else playing the game!

I've actually had mine set on "Hardest" for years. For sure, it makes the wolves come out of the woods for your villagers!

Respectfully,
Steve

In this game I am more of scenario designer than a player, but I still play a lot, both AoE II and III.

Are you good with the scenario editing?
Can you share a few of your maps with us?

I only have one basic, short map, showcasing my knowledge with triggers.
The features are: quicksand, some eye candy and some naming triggers. Nothing special, but I still like to fire it up sometimes to see how much I've improved.
Here it is.

I grabbed Age of Empires Online through Steam the other day. Its a free to play with a bunch of pay DLC available. There is a decent amount of content to the base game and I was having a ton of fun with it so I ended up grabbing the whole DLC pack on Steam. 66% off the normal price so it was 16.99 instead of $50.00.

I put about 4.5 hours into it yesterday evening. It is an interesting mix of genres since you have the normal AoE RTS with a bit of an MMO built around it. The time period that the game is in is closer to the first two AoE games, while the idea of home cities from AoE3 is where the MMO part comes into play. This time around though you actually get to manage and build up your home city instead of just leveling to unlock special abilities like in AoE3. In your home city, as well as different cities around the world map you'll find NPCs who give you quests (the campaign style missions for the RTS part of the game). After you get through the first few tutorial missions many quests can be played cooperatively (you can skip to city level 3 if you don't want the tutorial, but you miss out on some easy resources that way). When you complete a quest successfully you are given rewards and experience as you would expect in an MMO. The resources generated and earned at the home city level can be used to expand your city and eventually to craft gear and consumables that make your units/buildings more powerful. As you gain levels you also get points to spend in your tech tree.

If you're a fan of the AoE style RTS then you should definitely check this game out. The early quests are a bit on the easy side, but the game should be a lot of fun and the later quests allow you to play in Elite mode for more of a challenge and better rewards.

Sounds pretty fun.
If it's free I may have to check it out.
Would you say it's worth the $17 for the DLC?

I think so. You get a lot more content with the extra civilizations owning a premium civ allows you to have more storage space and use the best gear. Plus with the skirmish editor you can set up all kinds of skirmishes for you an your friends.

AoE II is the best PC game of all time. Period.

My only problem would be the AI's difficulty on Moderate. I only won on Moderate once, and that was a wonder victory.

I deliberately never build wonders because I feel it's a boring way to win the game. I liked destroying each team individually. :)

Haven't played Age of Empires 3 since last year. It was one of my favourite RTS games, though AOE2 was better. 👍
