PC hangs whenever shutting down or logging off

Okay guys, i'll make this quick at the moment, whenever i shutdown or logoff the PC, it kills all the processes and explorer and everything, then it just stops with the wallpaper still displaying. It's not too big a problem but i have to give it a hard shut down. I can still open task manager and reload explorer and the desktop but i can't shut it down or log off.

Any ideas why this might be happening? I'm using AVG 8.5.
 
Look around in task manager and see if there are any of your applications that aren't ending.
 
I tried DQuan's link, it hasn't helped. :(

In the last month or so, this got worse. Now instead of shutting down explorer, it only shuts down some icons in the tray. (bluetooth, volume, Intel gaphics driver, etc)

I can still switch user to shutdown, but can't log off without restarting. :(

In the event viewer, it comes up with this evey time i try:
The attempt to power off <Computer name> failed.
Event 1073, source: USER32.

It seems the USER32.dll file is involved.
 
What graphics driver are you using?
What OS are you using?

Update to the latest drivers on your devices and see if that helps.

Just some specs i found: Intel G31 graphics card; Intel graphics media accelerator driver; igxprd32.dll; version 6.14. Hope (some of) that helps.

Windows XP SP3. I actually recently updated the drivers i think, i'm not surre if that was when it started though. :boggled: I'll have a look at that.

I think it was done in October when the motherboard was replaced, but i'm not sure. If not, probably 2006 when we last got it repaired. Either that or it's probably never been done in the 3 and a half years we've had it.
 
What happens if you click Start>Run and type "shutdown -f" (without the"")?
 
I had various power woes until I realized that I forgot some of the motherboard mounting screws. I swapped components between cases and somehow missed a few screws. It's worth a check since you replaced motherboards back in October.

The mounting holes with the conducting pads are the ones to look for.

I'm sure it's not a hardware problem, just Windows is being annoying. My old motherboard worked great for 3 years, and i have an older PC that has had the same hardware for 14 years and still runs good.
 
You might want to try this (if you haven't already).
Login with the Administrator account only (if you have more than 1 admin. acct., just use yours).
No other users should be logged in.
Run AVG, and check the boxes in the "how to scan" (tab), "additional scan settings" popup that say "shutdown computer upon completion", and " Force shutdown if computer is locked".
This will accomplish two things, 1., a virus scan, and 2., it will test to see if their are other shutdown commands that work. (even if it does work, it won't fix the real problem, that will come later).

Let me know what happens, and I'll follow up with you through this thread, or PM if it gets too technical.
