No, I'm not talking about how the cars sound in chase cam in general, but the fact that only the middle channel is used in multi-speaker setups when you change to chace cam. The transfer from 5 channels to only the middle isn't even immediate, so it's easily distinguishable. And it sounds horrible, at least my middle speaker can't handle all car sounds on its own.

Eagerly updated to 2.10 last night hoping that this would be fixed.

No. Same as before. Changing gear normally shuts down the surround and sticks engine noise in the centre.

PD...
I imagine you have some sort of bug list priority. (all software should!)
This may be something like, fix the things that are most important to the biggest number of users. Therefore 5.1 audio output issues would probably be lower down the priority list.
Or at least fix the stuff that is relatively easy to fix.

But looking at the other 2.10 updates, it would seem that some sort of sensible bug fixing strategy is not something that you adhere to.
And surely this sort of bug is relatively easy compared to the other 'fixes' that have had priority.

As an audio guy I may be more picky than most, but this is bug should really get some attention... please?

Maybe they don't know why it does it yet? Or at least, they don't know how to fix it without breaking whatever it was they put in / changed that broke this in the first place.

I've never noticed it do weird things in 5.1 over HDMI, though. But I assume there's a thread on it somewhere already with the bigger picture...

That's why I have GT5 set to virtual surround instead of 5.1

I have some of my own surround sound problems but virtual surround is better in my opinion because it doesn't overuse the center channel

what i noticed is if you look left or right in a car the sound changes drastically especially in the Ferrari formula car , looking forward car sounds absolute gash , look left or right as if something is passing you the whole sound system sounds different , but in a really good way its as if they got all there sound position wrong.

but if you want sounds don't Play GT5 go elsewhere shouldn't be that way though. :(

Sure your settings are correct? GT5 defaults to 5.1 over HDMI (if it's available in the PS3 settings, which it is by default), and what you're describing sounds like what happens when only the front speakers of a 5.1 stream are being played - i.e. on stereo hardware that ignores the extra channels. Check that the PS3 and GT5 sound settings match your hardware.

Otherwise, it might just be because of the very high volume of that particular car combined with the dynamic range compression.

probably mate GT5 dont let me change it in menu not connected via optical maybe thats my problem , but its a sony 5.1 cinema system go figure no optical connection. it connects to tv via hdmi then a scart lead back to 5.1 box strangest thing i ever seen:grumpy:

I expect there's an issue with the translation from the HDMI input to SCART output in the TV somewhere. I saw this last week with HDMI input and optical output, as well (although it down-mixed all channels, rather than ignored the others), so it depends on the TV, I guess.

I'd say it's a little bit unfair to blame the game without checking your hardware first. Granted, the game could benefit from a sound test gizmo - I don't think the PS3 has one natively either, which is a gross oversight.

strange as everything else plays through 5.1 formula 1 Tv DVD'S and even blurays etc just Gt5 don't  then sound option is blanked out in gt5 menu i can only adjust the theater mode large and small etc

SCART, like optical, only carries two channels. You need to make sure that you're outputting 5.1 that is condensed to fit into two channels - i.e. non-PCM digital formats.

The two available on PS3 are Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. If both are selected in the sound setup screen, GT5 defaults to DTS, but GT5 will always prefer 5.1 PCM over these compressed formats if it's available via the PS3 settings - that may not be true for other games, and most ordinary DVDs use a compressed multi-channel digital audio track anyway.

What may be happening is your TV is simply removing the other channels from the 5.1 PCM streams and sending only the "stereo" portion down the SCART - clearly this leads to a lot of missing information in the soundscape.
Try deselecting the multi-channel PCM formats (which are useless for you anyway) from the PS3 sound options, leaving only DTS 5.1 and / or Dolby Digital 5.1 (depending on your receiver), plus the only two necessary (stereo) formats, as seen in the third pic here.

So would the error you're describing do this.

Two player mode - player 1 view - sat outside behind car and player 2 view- in car or bumper.

Player 1's car is always louder than player 2 (would be opposite if views swapped)

Possibly? Check your settings. If you've got a race exhaust and you're in chase view, it's going to be loud. It's one of the perennial problems with local multiplayer, though, having to fight to hear your car over the other's.

There also was a PS3 firmware upgrade, at least I only noticed when doing the GT5 upgrade. After that, I always have to go through the PS3 sound setup.

Second, try if the GT5 sound setup changes anything. Including room size and number of speakers, all the options are there to be fiddled with.

Thirdly it could be the amp settings.
