That's the Peugeot 5008. Mmm, exciting.

According to the press release, the 5008 is Peugeot's "new interpretation of the compact people carrier." No it's not. It's a Citroen C4 Picasso with smaller windows and half the design flair tip-exed out.

The interior is actually a bit of a surprise. The Picasso's one is excellent - funky, airy, interesting, and absolutely brimming with storage space and cubby holes. Oddly (seeing how they're essentially the same car) the 5008 manages to achieve none of that.

Firstly, there's the windows. In an MPV, you want nice big ones to make it airy, and give the kids a nice view. Naturally then, Peugeot have made them smaller.

Then there's the dashboard. Fine, they've got rid of Citroen's steering wheel, centered speedometer and all that French madness that beige-trouser wearing Peugeot buyers don't like. But instead, they've stuck in yards of menacing black plastic covered in thousands of buttons, and none of the massive cubby holes and extra glove boxes that you get in the Citroen. I mean it all looks quite nice, almost like an Audi, but it's just not what you want in an MPV.

And the whole car is just bathed in these uninspiring Grey hues. The seats look like designer German handluggage, which isn't ideal. Where's the French comfort? Where's the inviting appearance that's supposed to accommodate for everyone, not just the driver? It's just depressing, frankly - a fact that Peugeot have kindly demonstrated in their press photos:

However, there are some nice features. I've listed them below in handy bullet-point form:

  • It's not quite as pig ugly as every other Peugeot currently available
  • It doesn't sound like hot beverage based urination
  • It's got a head-up display, so you needn't look back down at the dreary dashboard.

That concludes the list of nice features.

This raises a mildly interesting debate, though - what the hell are Peugeot playing at? I just sort of assumed that they didn't know how to make decent cars. But look, here's a perfectly good car that (somehow) they've managed to ruin! What's going on?

...oh, and if anyone actually wants one, it'll be out in the autumn of this year.

 Those kids look miserable as anything!

The C4 Picasso looks much better than this, its kinda suprising as the rest of the Peugeot range looks quite decient.

Robin.

You can definitely tell that Nissan has influenced their design direction here.

I do like the dashboard, but it looks better suited for a car.

Really? Last I checked Nissan worked with Renault, which has NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING, to do with Peugeot-Citroen group.

👍 Peugeot have more to do with Mitsubishi given that their 4x4 is based on the Outlander (ditto with Citroen's off-roader the C-Crosser). And even then, there's very little else apart from that 4x4 they're working on with anyone. They share a few small engines with BMW for the MINI, and they share a couple of MPV and van platforms with FIAT, and that's about it.

Oh, and for the record, this is the best Peugeot at the moment, the Bipper, their small van, on the aforementioned PSA-FIAT platform:

Looks fairly funky, gets absolutely amazing fuel economy and when I last had a sit in one it felt particularly well screwed-together. And yet, I'd rather have it's Citroen or FIAT counterpart. Peugeots really don't do anything for me at the moment.

Yeah, but it's got a silly name. I'd much rather have the Citroen one... which is named after a cartoon clownfish... Much better. ;)

Fiat's example is called Fiorino which is about a billion times better than either of the Frenchies. Though the one with windows is called the Qubo, which is one of those words you're never quite sure how to pronounce. Kwu-bo? Cue-bo? Q'bo? Fiat's website seems to think it's "Koo-bo". Either way it's cool in a sort of rustic way, a bit like things like the Renault Kangoo and Citroen Berlingo used to be, but the tiddlers are cooler because they're not as obviously vans.

The kid in the back looks pissed. Its almost like a spot for time-out.

Where is the DVD player so he can enjoy Spongebob without having to sit next to sissy?

Oops, overlooked that. But it seems very Nissan to me (big, bold features that ultimately look ugly). The "extended" headlights are very...blah.

What gets me is that they put the clearly taller kid in the small seats, and the smaller kid in the bigger middle row...

I quite like that Qubo thing. I can't quite work out why, though... Perhaps its my fetish for small bright green cars.

They've clearly just done it to demonstrate how comfortable the 3rd row seats are. I mean they've failed, but still.

Not to keen on the outside of the thing but really liking that dash and interior. I myself have a standard C4 hatch at home and the interior is a pleasure to be in but I feel that the Picasso version doesn't pull off the dash look so well. Put the Citroen's body over the Peugeot's inside bits and all will be right! :sly:

Haha awesome, another C4 driver! Good choice sir :P

Why thank you :P Yeh it's been a great car, bought it brand new on an 07 plate. Just a 1.6 petrol model can't think of the exact spec coming to think of it! :dunce: But yeh, I love it! Don't drive it much through the week I'm mostly using my work van so the misses normaly runs around in it and she loves it to. Thinking of trading it in and maybe upgrading to the newest facelift shape in maybe a diesel engine? Not sure yet though need to get down the dealer and have a look, see what there like.

We've got the diesel on an '08, and it's excellent. Stupidly good MPG (it's hovering around 52 at the moment without too much effort), and only £35 tax :P It's probably not as quick as the petrol, but it's not too bad. It'll still do 80 without too much drama.

I quite like the newer ones. They're basically the same, but with a different front end and new alloys as far as I can tell. Oh and for some bizzare reason they've moved the rev counter to the left of the speedometer... Oh well :)

I quite like it because it's what I'd describe as an "honest" car. It's not trying to be a new fad, it's not trying to be retro, it's not trying to have a sporty image, it's just a cheap, economical, small, practical car with an intelligent design that's a bit different from the average dull supermini. All this, and it reminds me of the old Citroen C15 van, which when I mentally picture it is always being driven on it's doorhandles by a mad French pâtissier...

The Qubo is absolutely mental, but it's because of that that I really like it.
