There have been a couple threads talking about the Phantom console system, which I personally think is a stellar idea. They just need to get their act together and produce a product.
The lowdown:
Using basic computer components ...
Hard drive
Network
USB controllers
NO CD / DVD
The system downloads games to the hard drive and plays them from there.
Oh my GOSH! This is exactly what I want the PS3 to be. But I've come to the opinion that you really do need a DVD drive because a lot of people are going to want to buy a packaged game. Also, I think it needs built in WiFi and Bluetooth. WiFi because it's cool, bluetooth for controllers, and about six USB ports just to make sure.
But this thread isn't about what I want, it's about the Phantom, which apparently has put the company Infinium (it's creator) 27.5 million dollars in the hole. I could totally see Microsoft coming along to bail them out and make it into the XBox 2. Which I think would also be hella-bad-ass. But I still attest to it needing wireless controller options. Right now I've got my PS2 and XBox on the floor with all EIGHT controllers strung across the room. It's spagetti - I'll take a picture tonight.
