Hi guys
I'm getting a PS3 for my birthday in November but I can't decide whether to get a Phat one or the Slim one. The Phat looks nicer IMHO but hte Slim has more space (EDIT: HD wise ).
I'm confused.com!
Thanks
Allyn

The Slim really doesn't take up any less space if you compare the dimensions, so if physical space is a concern it really doesn't make much difference. The main difference between the two is that the Slim is quieter and has a bigger hard drive (though you could pick up a 40GB model used and put a 320GB drive in it for the same price as a Slim).
Actual reliability of the Slim is unknown, but I would personally wait a month or two for Sony to weed out the various "overheating" and "catching on fire" problems that they seem to have with every initial batch of Slim versions of their consoles.

Also, did you mean PS3?

 I probably should have read that post through before Submiting!!!
I would be wanting a brand new one, just because it'll be special innit.
My Bday is at start of November so if there are any overheating/firey type issues then they should be fixed by then yeah?
thanks for quick reply 👍

One feature of the slim that I would love to have is the ability to bitstream dolby true HD and dts master audio. That's the one thing that drives me crazy about the first gen ps3. I really don't know if I would trade the SACD player the first gen has though just to see my receiver say dolby true hd, as the ps3 can decode the new audio formats anyway.

If I were going to buy a new ps3 I would get the slim just because of the bitstream capability over the older versions.

Get the Slim. The Fat one had too many heat related failures, (Blue Ray, Power Supply)failures should be added to that list.

The Slim is supposed to have had major improvements combined with the fact that it generates alot less heat....

GET THE SLIM !!!!!!

Linux desn't really interest me to be honest thanks.
Has anyone heard of any cases of overheating/failures in the slim yet?
Does the Slim come with a Dual Shock 3 in the box?

I'm swaying more and more towards the Slim the more I think about it.
November cannot come quickly enough

Slim, definitely.

Unless you think the Phat looks good enough to justify the lower disk space and higher electric bill.

the only overheat issue with previous models i know of is when one leaves ps3 enclosed in a cabinet of some sort. had mine for 2years now and no heat problems . its on for easily 5 hours a night, even bottom of system is not hot. now as for the ps3 slim, there is no really high significant improvements over previous models .

I asked a co-worker the samething, I'll run it by you guys, space limitation doesnt mater to me the its the bang for the buck, memory vs. dollars. So with that in mind what's the better PS3 a Slim or 'Phat'? Which has more memory for the $299 their being sold for.
