Geez, just got back from a lousy "team lunch". A firm favourite of course, I mean where else can you be indulged by "phoneys" - as J.D. Salinger put it?

Why is it that on such occasions people feel it necessary to hand out fake laughs ad nausium?

EG:
Employee X: "Hey Y, you should go to the New Years party dressed like Robin Hood"

Employee Y: "Why?"

Employee X: "Cos you wore tights to last years fancy dress party!"

Roars of laughter

Employee Y: "That was also cos I went as a medi-evil knight"

Roars of laughter

Why do people have to be so fake. I dont laugh. When something genuinely funny is said, I'll laugh then.

And then to make matters worse, there was a shooter on the menu called a "Bl*wj*b".

Nope, 40 year olds dont apparently have maturity, cos every corny pun under the bright blue sky was thrown out to more roars of laughter.

I just wanted to copy and paste that little green roll-eyes face on everything I could lay my hands on.

Life in Hell rules the Earth.

And I agree wholeheartedly on your rant.

Stuff like this irks me. It makes me want to whip it out and say "I'll take one Bl*wj*b please", which of course would offend these polite, mature people. There are serious contradictions regarding right conduct among the type of people you astutely identify. Being able to see it is a double edged sword.

On the other hand, I work a bunch of people who really do make me laugh (or laugh at them).

Phoneys are just a part of life, but to act anything like Holden Caulfield really is Life in Hell. I read Catcher in the Rye in highschool, and loved it. But when I read it 10 years later, I was halfway though and realized it was HC who was phony.

I think that a lot of people forget how to live in the real world. They're so caught up in work and home life that when they go out (which is usually once a quarter), they've forgotten how to behave in those social situations.

It annoys me, too.

Thank you for saying this. I thought I was the only person in the world who hated Catcher In The Rye and really wanted to just slap Holden a good one and tell him to shut up.

But I'll tell you, nothing in the world is more annoying than a group of 6-10 middle aged women, at least 3 of whom are divorced, at a Mexican restaurant for the "girls' night out", with a pitcher of peach-berry flavored frozen margheritas. The shrieks of cackling laughter, deafening though they may be, are never quite enough to drown out the one who insists on describing her sex life in that strident voice that carries across half a room.
