After looking at other peoples photos, mine seem unusally dark?

Should I be raising the brightness when I take the photos? They look ok on my TV but on various monitors they seem exceptionally dark.
 
this is a pretty common problem. most people adjust the contrast levels in a pc program.

That's kinda what I was thinking of doing. I'm thinking that should correct a lot of my problems.
 
You can get Photoshop from various places in a not-so-legal manner. But you can also get Photoshop Elements for cheap from Adobe, or you can get the full version for nearly as cheap as Elements using a student discount.
