Photoshop CS4 - automatic grid when using the selection tools

Hey guys,

I've been using CS2 for a long time but when I got my ASUS I upgraded to CS4. Today was the first day I used it as I was used to but there is a problem that drives me mad.

When I use the polygonal lasso tool a grid appears on the image whenever I close my selection. I turned of "extras" in the view menu but then my selection also disappears.

So far I haven't found an option relating to this yet in the program, does anyone know what my issue is?

Why did you go with CS4 when there was CS5?

Didn't figure that out until just recently actually, but they are probably more or less the same and I expect CS5 to be a bit heavier on the budget...
