how do i get my pics from my ps2 onto say my pc????

If you have a USB pen drive, just plug that into one of the two USB sockets and when you go to save the photo, it will give you an option to save to USB pen drive. Don't forget to ramp up the image quality when you save to the pen drive. That way you get better quality photos. It saves the image as jpg which can be viewed on your PC.

I've tried a USB cable straight to my PC, but that did not work

Something that behaves like a disc drive but is made with so called flash memory instead of a magnetic disc.

could i not just put a memory stick in there and try that????

a memory stick is the same thing, as long as its got a usb connector it should plug straight in at the front of the ps2. then siply save your photos to it (image quality at max - j8mie), and hey presto when you plug it back into your pc it will have a nice little folder called gt4 and your images in jpg format save in there. good luck.
