When I was younger, I used to live in Lancaster, PA. For additional info., the county has the highest Amish to Non-Amish person ratio. There was an Amish mart about 2 miles from my house and they made the most amazing chocolate pie. They usually came with natural chocolate and hand-whipped cream. Every few weeks, my family would take trips down there and pick up some produce. My question would always be if we could purchase some chocolate pies, which never lasted more then a week.
There were other pies that had amazing flavor there as well. Like, Rhubarb pie and fresh Strawberry pie.
The way I see it is that "pie" has a roof, "tart" does not. Both have pastry bases and sides, where "bake" do not. However, Americans seem to refer to any pastry-based sweet as a "pie", hence "pecan" and "key lime", which are both awesome, being referred to as "pies".
This is, I feel, at the root of the cheesecake debate.
