There seemsto be 3 different kinds of pirate's people. 1, Hate's them all. 2, Liked the 1st, but didn't like the 2nd. 3, Loved them both. Me, im in the 3rd, i loved the 1st Pirates, it was a brilliant (if daft) film. It was the ultimate dumb popcorn film. And possibly the best film of the year it came out (i forget when it came out). It introduced us to the legendary Jack Sparrow & launched Johnny Depp from weird actor in strange films. To weird actor in strange films that everybody know's and all women love!

Then there was the 2nd film. Dead Mans Chest, which alot of people didn't like (i'm not sure why). I saw it twice at the cinema (the 2nd time was more threw force but anyways), and i have to say it was completely different the 2nd time. 1st time round i thought it was just as hilarious as the 1st, but the action kinda sucked. 2nd time round, i thought the action was much better, but it didn't seem as funny. Weird huh.

Now we have At Worlds End. Am sure people know wether there seeing this or not. But in the worlds shortest review "its the worst of the 3". And i can sum up why in 3 words "NOT FUNNY ENOUGH". The 1st 2 films are hilarious, mainly down to Johnny Depp & his excellently excentric Jack Sparrow. They did seem to have cut him out slghtly less in the 2nd (for some stupid reason), but what there was, was brilliant. He is in this one even less. When he is on screen he is class (he reminds me of Scrat from Ice Age), and steals everything. But he's just not in it enough.

The rest of the cast are the same as before. Keira is gorgeous, lovely & pouty, and i have to say, she looks much sexier in a mess than all done up for TV shows or whatever. Orlando is the same as before, a great big plank. He's not a "bad" actor, he's just bland. This time we have the excellent Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) back. And he is just as good, his little bickering's with Jack are fun to watch. However his accent seems to wobble sometimes. Then there is the usual cast of everyone else in it from before. And the legendary Chow Yun-Fat, China's best actor (maybe 2nd to Jackie Chan). Who is unfortunately wasted, completely. He has no proper "fight" scene's & is just there to look hard. He does have one brilliant scene with Jack were he smacks him on the face.

The story is just as unfollowable as the 2nd film, there is so much going on that you don't really care about any of it. All you care about is "when is Jack going to be on screen" & when i say Jack i dont just refer to Sparrow. I also refer to the monkey Jack. Who out acts half the cast by miles (especially Orlando). How the hell they can get him to do what he did, i don't know, but he is brilliant. Oh and the bit in the snow. I've never heard a cinema laugh & go "awww" in unison like that before.

Then there is the finale battle sequence that has Bruckheimer stamped all over it. Its absolutely amazing. Very stupid in parts, but amazing. Intense isn't the right word, it's just superb to watch, with some of the best cgi i've ever seen. There is also an action sequence at the beginning, but to be honest i can't remember it at all. I can only remember the finale battle (sorry).

It might sound like i am praising it alot. And i guess i am, and maybe as a stand alone film i would give it a higher rating (reminds me of Blade Trinity). But it's just not funny enough (the opposite of Blad Trinity). I can only recall 2 LOL moments. the 1st 2 films had, well, alot more than that. I hope the new film that they are apparently making is just Jack Sparrow (a prequel or something).

Out of the 2 "blockbusters" of the year (this and Spiderman 3) I'd say the best is 28 Weeks Later :D

6/10

(I apologise if there is any spelling mistakes or text-isms, i was writing this for another site were i don't get moaned at for such things :sly: )

I actually just got back from the movie, and my mixed-up thoughts shall follow:

- I didn't care much for the first movie the first time I saw it, but I loved the second movie. I'm the odd-man-out in most cases...
- I went into the theater expecting a lot, and to be honest, I think I got my $6 worth (hooray student discounts!).
- Acting was fairly decent all the way around, although its still all about Johnny Depp. However, Keith Richards did a SURPRISINGLY good job, and actually had some genuinely funny moments in the movie.
- Speaking of humor, I laughed a lot. Of course, I'm a Disney nerd, so I caught on to a lot of the Pirates Ride jokes. Other than that, there were plenty of "Ha ha" moments, enough to keep me entertained to say the least.
- Visual effects were nothing short of amazing, certainly what you would expect with the monstrous budget that went along with the film (one of the largest in history).

...But, in the end, I felt it came up a bit short. Not to give away the ending, there has been room left for a fourth movie, which is a good thing... With some characters pretty much gone for good, trust me, its a good thing. Lets leave it with Jack and Barbossa, and if my hunch is correct, the story looks like its going to move a bit closer to home...

At World's End gets a pretty solid 8/10

Oh, and best summer movie? I liked Spider-Man 3 quite a bit (despite my nerd hatred of the story), but I'm still waiting for Transfomers before the blockbuster crown can be awarded...

I meant to say comment on Transformers. I saw a quick trailer for Transformers before Pirates & it was the best part! lol.
I don't really see how Michael Bay can screw it up & i really hope he dosen't. I don't think i was ever a fan of Transformers as a child, but i am so looking forward to the film.

Loved the first, loved the second, loved the 3rd, great films, jack sparrow is awesome in each and keira knightly is incredibley enjoyable to look at.

Great series of films!

Completely agree with you on the final battle, nothing short of absolutely spectacular!

I loved Pirates #1... was sort of put off by #2... simply becuase it dragged on for too long and still didn't give you a proper ending... granted, there were some properly wonderful moments in #2, but each second over 2 hours dragged it further down, as the story got darker, gloomier, more cynical, and ultimately ended in a big, glaring "To Be Continued" sign (not literally, but you know what I mean.)

#3 kept the same manic energy from the first two movies, but held onto it longer. Having been on the "Pirates" ride a few times myself, I let out quite a few chuckles here and there (like YSSMAN)... loved the cameo appearance by the dog... and there was sufficient comedy and comedic banter throughout the film to keep it interesting.

What really was missing was any semblance of logic or plot... an exaggeration, maybe, but with so many double-crosses, double-double-crosses, triple-double-crosses and associated plot twists, it got pretty hard to keep track of the "good guys" and the "bad guys". In the end, you figure out that most everyone who's a pirate doesn't really fit the traditional "good guy" label, anyway.

I know Jack Sparrow's supposed to be the little butterfly that causes hurricanes with every flap of his dandies... but does everyone else have to do it, too?

Unclosed plot holes and unexplained sequences abound. WARNING: SPOILERS (highlight to read) - They kill off Elizabeth's father after maybe five minutes on-screen, and if you missed those two lines of dialogue discussing it, you wouldn't understand why... Calypso collapses into a gibbering mess of crabs and doesn't even make a dramatic appearance when her beloved/be-hated Davy Jones dies... and by the time you get to the final "parley" sequence, you don't know who knows what (does King Elizabeth know Jack wants to be on Davy Jones's boat?) or who's planning what or what the heck is going on.

In a film franchise like this, wherein the cast of "name" characters has grown a bit too long (loved Keith Richard's look... "Get out of my way, boy..." Wahahaha!), you can't avoid the "Ensemble" effect, where you often lose track of one or two characters for too long between scenes. Still, despite all these problems, it works out, somewhat.

It's a wonderful muddle. The final fight sequence borders on "Lord of the Rings - Two Towers" or "Matrix Reloaded" ridiculous without ever going over that edge (simply because they pay absolutely no attention to what the rest of the armada is doing for fifteen full minutes...) and it ends on the proper note... bar that unsatisfyingly romantically tragic ending for the love-interest portion of the story... too sappy. The last portions with Jack, Mister Gibbs and Barbossa get things back on the proper tone. :)

I give it about a 7/10 or an 8/10. I could probably watch it again... but maybe on video. My missus absolutely hated it, though.

EDIT: Probably because she didn't have Keira Knightley to rest her eyes on every other scene... I've been watching her since "Princess of Thieves" and "Bend it like Beckham" (and we have a copy of "Love, Actually" at home... :D :D :D ), and damn... even though she's more mature now, she's still cute as buttons! The Missus would have watched Orlando Bloom, but he spent much of the movie brooding, looking solemn, and hovering just off-screen.

Spoiler!!

I thought it was pretty good, though a bit sad. I did get a bit of a "ummm...wow, ok...." when Keira started smiling while Will kissed her leg.

I had one question though....Why didn't Elizabeth just go with Will on his ship?

Not a bad move, though it Elizabeth was in more scenes than anyone else. But she looked hot, so I wasn't too bothered. :D And as said, a lot of plot holes like Calypso. I was expecting something bigger than a storm....Or why weren't the other Pirate Lords fighting while Jack's crew fought Davy Jones.

Yeah... that's the thing... Davy Jones has the power to bind shipwrecked sailors to his servitude, right (with the bonus that now they don't have to be scaly, clawed, coral encrusted monsters)? How many gosh-fersnicket times has Keira been shipwrecked throughout the series?

Bind her to the Dutchman, make her darn near immortal, and they can sail the seven seas together forever.

But, D'Oh, that would have been too obvious, even if half the audience was expecting it to happen, because there's absolutely no reason they couldn't do it... :D
