It's something more like a glitch.
Usually, I take them by using the camera choices that I get with other car, that happens to be cruising the straight at that particular moment.
Not great pictures, though.

Best way to take "pit" photos is, as wowbagger said, to use that of another car passing by. Camera option 1 is the one to use. You may need to be patient in getting the camera to the right location though...
The best "pit" photos come from tracks with low pit walls, like Ascari, Mount Panorama and Deep Forest!
Knowing when to pause the replay is something that needs to be finely tuned! To get just one photo could take up to ten minutes of rewinding and pausing before the right shot is taken!
The camera used in the black and white photo is from the car on the straight.

There's a good spot at Brands Hatch where you can capture the "action" without the walls/barriers. Otherwise it looks like this..
I must try it again sometime with some more varied "proper" race cars - it might look more impressive.
