I can't believe there isn't a thread for this game already. I'm new to planetside. I didn't play the first edition but have been playing planetside 2 since launch day and am amazed at the scale of this game.

Planetside 2 is a free to play futuristic MMOFPS where you battle for sections of continents. You start by choosing 1 of 3 different factions and then try and take over different sections of a map for your faction.

The battles are like no other game I have ever played or seen. I've been in gunfights with groups of about 10 vs 10 and battles where it seemed like there were hundreds on both sides, with ships and helicoptors raining down gunfire and missles, while battalions of tanks rolled over the hills to attack the base, followed by large groups of foot soldiers. There's really something for everyone in this game.

The real kicker is that this game is FREE!!! You can buy a subscription or pay for in game money to unlock more weapons or vehicles and such, but everything can also be earned in game with no real money spent. There is no level cap for free players and they have full access to the game. It is certainly worth a try being that it's free. If nothing else just to see what the scale of multiplayer FPS war games are capable of being.

The game is a little buggy now. It's not to bad and I personaly haven't had any problems at all with it, but you will get a floating dead body or weird animation every now and then. But it's free and only been out for a week so that is to be expected.

Here is a decent video that shows the scale of Planetside 2.

Yeah, I've been meaning to download this for a while. Looks like Arma II mixed with BF3 but in space or something. Free to play, though... I can see why they did it, but I'd prefer to pay £30 for the full game and get everything, even if I have to unlock it BF3-style or whatever. Still, looks great, I just hope using in-game credits isn't the massive, massive grind F2P games usually are. Blacklight Retribution got that balance spot on, I think.

You don't need to pay a dime to get everything. The entire game is free. The difference between paying and not paying is how fast you can unlock items and earn in game money to spend on stuff. When you download the game you get the entire experience for free. There really is no catch. I've driven tanks, fourwheelers. planes etc. and haven't spent a dime on the game.

It is like paying for BF3 and having to unlock everything only you don't have to pay for it. As far as using in game credits go, I'm not really sure about the grind. I've bought a few vehicles and a scope for a gun so far.

Yeah, I know, it's just apart from Blacklight Retribution every free to play game I've ever played has been a ridiculous grind to unlock anything, or at least earn enough credits to buy something permanently, I just hope PS2 isn't like that because otherwise people who are willing to pay will have a huge advantage. Try APB Reloaded and compare it to Blacklight, it's ridiculous. I'll download this tonight, should get an opportunity to play later in the week. Maybe if we can convince enough GTPers we could form a squad or something.

Edit: Did you ever try Tribes: Ascend? It had jetpacks and 'skiing' (i.e. sliding around on your backside) so it was possible to pick up some crazy speed, quite fun but I felt it was lacking something... Fun, I think it's called.

the game is awesome but be careful as it's filled with bugs, the main one prevents some people from playing if you have 32 bit windows (crashes every 20-30 mins) so sadly I can't really enjoy it

I've been pretty lucky so far. The worst I've had is shooting at people who were just floating in the air and I thought the had jst packs but really they were long gone. That's only happened a couple times though,a nd it's really easy to look passed when you think about how big of a game it is.

What amazes me is the scale of all the fighting going on in real time all over the continents. While I'm in a fight with hundreds of people for a control point, there are other fights of the same size going on all over the place that I can go and join at any time.

If i can find a decently sized group of players to start playing with often this may be the only shooter I play for a long time. If i can't though and keep going solo it might not be this fun in a few weeks.

Rock Paper Shotgun has a fairly large group of PS2 players (or so it appears), I was thinking I might join up with them. They tend to have a fairly good sense of humour but I think the majority of them are British. The RPS Arma II meets appear to be completely hilarious, so I imagine it's more or less the same with PS2.

I think the point is though, if you like the game then you won't have issue paying to unlock things, after all you didn't pay anything for the game. Its not like when you buy a brand new game for £40 full price and then have to pay more for additional DLC that was already on the disc.

I haven't played Planetside 2 because I'm not sure it's my cup of tea, if it's really grindy that's completely fair otherwise how would they ever make money off their hard work? Similar to Simraceway, you could grind all of the content if you wanted but it would take forever, but if you liked the game that much you wouldn't have a big issue with spending a little money on it anyway, considering you got the game completely free!

Yeah, I didn't make my point clear at all in my second post and missed out the key point which makes this an important issue.

In APB Reloaded, you start with basic, crap gear, and as you progress you get better stuff OR you can pay real money and get better stuff instantly, meaning if you're playing it for free you're going to get killed plenty by those who bought their gear or have been playing longer than you. In Blacklight, the weapons and gear are well-balanced so no matter what you have, you have advantages and disadvantages over everyone else, maybe your rifle does huge damage but it has a low rate of fire, maybe your armour is weak but you can move faster than others, that sort of thing.

So I guess what I meant was, I primarily hope Planetside 2 has well-balanced gear, and secondarily hope it isn't ludicrously difficult to unlock new stuff for free. You (Bazz) know I've spent money on Simraceway so I'm not against the idea, but I am more likely to be against paying if it's clear that's my only option because it's just kind of insulting. I understand they have to make money somehow, I've read about various Free to Play systems and the huge amount of maths and psychology behind it all, but... You know. I just feel like (and this isn't a Russian Reversal joke) I'm the one getting played sometimes, and that's because that's exactly how these things work. Sometimes it's obvious (such as weapons costing just a tiny bit over the lowest amount you can add to your account), sometimes it's less so. But yeah, if I join the game with the default gear and I get killed over and over without being given a chance just because someone else has bought better (not just different) gear, I'm going to find it hard to justify sticking around and I'll just go back to BF3. But they've probably learned from others' mistakes in that regard and know it has to be fair to entice people to pay.

Aaanyway, that's enough speculation from me, I'm downloading the game overnight tonight so hopefully I'll be able to get going tomorrow evening. Any of you guys interested in squadding up around 8-9PM GMT?

I played a bunch of PS2 during the beta and had a lot of fun with it. There is definitely a bit of a learning curve if you don't have any experience with it. Getting dropped into huge maps is a bit overwhelming at first. Remember to join a squad (or whatever they call them) when you log in. Even if you just use the function to join one automatically. Much easier to figure the game out when you have some people to follow.

A lot of things were locked when I was playing the beta so I'm not sure how hard it is to get some of the upgrades and better items without money. The basic upgrades like improved sights and attachments weren't too hard to get though.

This is definitely a game that you'll need to sink some time into to enjoy either way though. You need the time to get familiar with the maps and to appreciate the ebb and flow of the battles.

Edit: Thought I'd add that I never experienced any major problems or bugs during my time with the game, and that was during the beta period. I had a few crashes here or there but otherwise the game ran well and looked beautiful.

Any of you guys playing? I'm a Vanu guy on the Miller server, I just spent about an hour as an Infiltrator. Very much fun getting up behind an enemy, er, spawn truck thing, killing a few then turning invisible and running away, only to come back and do it again. Kind of annoying though as the other faction(s?) were far more co-ordinated than my own, but still, that was fun. In the time I played I got about 15 Certifications, but I can't remember how many I need for stuff. I might see if I remember to play often and if I do I may spend a little on it.

I like it, though the grinding is ridiculous, but even with the standard gear you can pop heads, so nice for a F2P

Hey guys,

Is there a quick way of getting cert points? I'm getting about 40/hour if I'm lucky.

I think 40 per hour is a pretty good rate, last time I played I was getting 20-30. Also this thread has just reminded me, there's a sale on Station Credits today, you get three times the amount for your cash. I might get some...
