Devil May Cry
This is my first game review so feedback is welcomed.
Genre
Action/Adventure. Made by Capcom.
The Story
2 thousand years ago a demon swordsman named Sparda rebelled against the devil to "wage a one-man war" to save the human world from damnation. Now Dante, the main character, finds out that the devil is planning to take over the human world once again. Dante goes on a quest to find out who Sparda was and how he fits into the puzzle. Dante finds out that he has "powers" because he was born with the blood of ancient demons and he is the key to defeat the armies of hell and the devil.
The game begins when Dante is in his shop and a Trish, a strange woman, who resembles his mother comes in and trys to kill him. She finds out about his powers and she realizes that he is the key to saving the humans. She leads him to a castle, in the middle of nowhere, that is the opening to the underworld and the fighting begins.
Gameplay
The gameplay is near seamless because of little to no load times. There are short breaks inbetween each chapter to save and stock up on items or to learn new attack combos.
Now this might not sound like much but there are only three main weapons: Sparda, Alistor (thunder sword), and Ifrit (flame gauntlets). He uses those weapons in harmony with 4 guns: Ebony & Ivory (Dante's handmade, automatic handguns), a shotgun, a grenade gun, Needle Gun (can only be used underwater), and Nightmare B (not sure as to what this is, it latches on to his arm and shoots green energy).
The game consists of a lot of button mashing but there are also many combos using his main weapon and gun to use powerful attacks and technical moves. Dante can also turn into a true demon after his gauge charges completely. His attacks are more powerful, he is faster, and he recovers health.
Since this is by the makers of Resident Evil, the cameras are in a set place, but unlike the Resident Evil series, the cameras aren't annoying and you can see everything clearly.
The game can be played in 6 difficulty levels: Easy Mode (you have to earn this by being really bad at the first three "chapters"), Normal Mode (you start out in this one), Hard Mode (you get this after you beat normal), Legendary Dark Knight (you get this after you beat hard), Dante Must Die (you get this after you beat Legendary Dark Night), and Super Dante Mode (you get this after Dante Must Die, this is the easiest mode of the game). The game progresses through cut scenes and the game is divided into chapters. There are a few puzzles to slove through the course of the game but most of it is killing the bad guys and bosses.
Graphics
What can I say! It doesn't slow down even with a full screen of enemies. The graphics are clear all of the time and the characters and backrounds are smooth. Very good.
Replay Value
There isn't much replay value to this game because once you've gotten everything, it stays when you restart the game and you know where to go and what to do. The only real point to playing the game over is to get all of the difficulty modes, especially Super Dante Mode where you have an infinate Devil Gauge (turns you into a demon) and a huge life bar.
Audio
Quality over quantity. This game doesn't have a lot of music, but its good. During the fights, they play Japanese metal, and when you're solving a puzzle or searching for an item, they play spooky horror movie music. The only downfall is that the sounds that Dante makes when he hacks at an enemy are over used.
Summary
This is a good game for anyone who liked any of the older Resident Evil games. Once you play this one though, you'll never go back to Resident Evil or Dino Crisis. Like always, rent the game before you buy it and since this is a long game, you won't get too far in the rental. Its by Capcom so you know its good.
Rating
Story: 9/10, its no Final Fantasy, but its still good.
Audio: 9/10, Dante's noises are over used.
Gameplay: 10/10, there are a lot of items, puzzles, and killing. Its almost seemless.
Replay Value: 8/10, once you've gotten everything, you got it all.
Graphics: 10/10, smooth as glass and doesn't slow down or freeze up.
