Playstation 3 differences

i'm planing to buy a ps3 for Gran Turismo 5 and some other games

i've notice there has been different versions of the ps3
one with card reader and other stuff

can some one recummend what version to get or explain the differences of each

i could careless about card reader. i've also heard u can changed the harddrive to a biggerone. so hard drive size don't matter to me. what i want is something with the best video out put support like 1080i, fast loading speed, ram, and wifi is a plus

basically looking for performance and price

As far as I know, the 40gb version is the only SKU which is currently in production, 20gb, 60gb and 80gb versions have stopped being made so the 40gb is the only one you can get right now.
Not too bad though, it only has 2 USB ports (2 less than the 60gb), no card reader and no backwards compatibility but other than that, it's pretty much the same, though I did hear that the 40gb has a newer processor than the 60gb.

thanks .D3 i'm considering getting the 40gb model now
i guess the only down fall is it doesn't play ps2 games but i still got my ps2 for that haha

any news if they will make the 40gb with backwards compatible?
and the pricing?

Well, out of the models that are available now (40 & 80 gig), they run both the same, there is no reason why they shouldn't.

80 GB
  • Card Reader
  • Backwards compatibility with PS2 game (80% or so, considering the 20% are Japanese games you never heard of, it wouldn't really matter :P)
  • 4 USB ports
40 GB

  • No Card reader
  • No backwards compatibility
  • 2 USB ports
So, if you play a lot of PS2 games, Get the 80 Gig, if not, get the 40 Gig, and possibly a USB hub if you want to play something like Rock Band with 3 other people.

You can upgrade the HDD to something like a 250 GB, but you have to get the right kind.

Well, after looking around a bit, they are going to release a 80GB with MGS4 and a Dualshock 3 Controller (the one with rumble, the current one doesn't have rumble)

Edit, I got t'reed a bit, but they HAVEN'T Discontinued the 80GB, see above.

No plans to change the 40GB, as it doesn't need to be changed.

From,
Chris.

Just don't buy a 20gig if you get the chance as they have no wireless function inbuilt .. the 40 gig sounds like it will be ideal for you anyway 👍

Ofcourse the best one you could find would be an original 60GB but they are quite hard to come by and it would probably cost the same as a new 80GB (people put a premium on it because it has the PS2 chips and all the benefits of the other models).

I managed to get a 60GB from GAME UK, okay so it was 2nd hand but still it only set me back £300 for the console.

You're looking at performance and price you say. Well the 40GB model is $400 and the 80GB is $500. AFAIK both systems are identical in terms of performance however I've heard the 80GB model runs a little louder than the 40GB.

1080p is much better... a lot better then 1080i

these are most important specs you need to know...

Model---------------PS3 20GB ----PS3 40GB----PS3 60GB------PS3 80GB
MSRP------------------n/a------------$400--------$500----------$500
Hard disk size ---------20GB---------40GB---------60GB---------80GB
Network---------------Ethernet only----Ethernet and Wi-Fi for all others
Plays PS2 games? -------Yes-----------No-----------Yes---------Yes
Flash memory compatibility -None-------None-------Yes------------Yes
USB ports ---------------4--------------2 -----------4-------------4

I think at GameStop you can only buy a new 40 GIG version and thats it. All the other consoles are USED!, but if you get lucky enough you can still get a 80GIG new, and if you even more luck the 60 gig.....
but get the 40, it has an upgraded chip so it runs cooler, but dont worry even if you get a older model it wont melt like a xbox360 lol

All the consoles support HDMI that can put max a 1080p all you need to buy is a cheap 25 -40 dollar HDMI cable in order to work use that feature, not all games support 1080p most are 720p which is still really really good.

Tell us what version you will get before you get one. :)

Twenty-five bucks? Your buying the wrong cables. :P

Give these a look. I picked up one, as did a co-worker, shipped for $8.005 each. It's damn hard to divide a penny in half, btw.

Nice find :)
When I got my TV at a circuit city i right away grabbed the HDMI , some were going as high as 60 dollars.. and i think that 25 dollar one was cheapens they had.. Oh well :P

Wal*Mart has the PS3 branded HDMI cables for $19.99 locally, so you can find cheaper HDMI cables for decent prices without looking too hard. I'm sure WM has them even cheaper in the A/V aisle.
