Sony Computer Entertainment of America confirmed tonight that they will debut their next PlayStation platform at the upcoming Game Developer's Conference, according to the company. Bracing themselves for the largest showing at the conference in their history, Sony will divulge more information on their new platform (which is currently being called the PlayStation 3) along with the PSP, PS2, and new EyeToy innovations they have planned.

"Developers are an enormous part of our success as they drive content and innovation forward, making PlayStation the best gaming experience for millions of consumers worldwide," said Andrew House, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "The Game Developers Conference enables us to collaborate with developers, share with them our vision for game development for new PlayStation platforms, and demonstrate our commitment to the global development community."

This year's Game Developer's Conference is scheduled to take place from March 7-11.

Sony plans internal PS3 briefing next week; public unveiling on track for E3

Sony plans internal PS3 briefing next week; public unveiling on track for E3

Sources at GDC let slip details of Sony's internal PS3 unveiling

Sony is planning to show off the PlayStation 3 to its key worldwide executives at a major internal briefing next week, it has emerged, but the consumer unveiling of the next-gen platform is still not expected until E3 in May.

Information about the briefing has emerged privately from senior sources close to Sony at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, with several senior staffers from the firm's overseas offices making the trip to the event next week.

However, further chatter among some developers at the show which pointed towards a rather more public PS3 unveiling in Tokyo later this month has been officially denied, with a SCEE representative telling GamesIndustry.biz that "we've already said that the first showing of the next generation PlayStation will be at E3 this year."

Next week's briefing is believed to be strictly for internal staff at Sony, with even the company's closest development partners from overseas not on the guest list. "What I can say is that I'm not going to Japan this week," one very senior PlayStation development source told GI.biz off the record.

What exactly the Sony execs will get to see in Tokyo is hard to say. The final specification for the system is almost certainly complete, and if it is to be shown at E3, we'd expect that the physical design of the hardware has also been completed.

However, whether software demonstrations will be a part of the briefing is another question entirely - but it seems eminently possible, with several well-informed sources at GDC insistent that several of Sony's Japanese partners have had quite advanced PS3 development kits for "a couple of months", with the kits now making their way into selected developers in the west as well.

is there any websites where you can get a look at the.........erm.........PS3?
It´s debut to the public will happen at this year´s E3, so the answer is no!

And even being showed at E3, its appearence will probably change until it´s released.

The new PSM magazine has a artist's version of it and it looks fantastic. It's the April 2005 issue.

Does that magazine also release any information about the PS3 that we all don't know about? :odd: :O

British Doing PS3 Development
Sony already giving top UK developers next-gen tools prior to official unveiling.

March 21, 2005 - GameIndustry.biz reports that Sony "continues quietly rolling out dev kits to select partners." Specifically, word is the mega corporation's European wing is being outfitted with the latest PlayStation 3 development systems, as are a few key third-party British developers.

While this news is really no surprise (new platform launches are always preceded by the distribution of kits, especially to first-party developers) it's nice to see that SCE and its Getaway, EyeToy, ATV and perhaps even Killzone teams are now prepared to begin tooling their forthcoming wares for the next-generation. As for the other developer? Our money would be on Criterion.
GameIndustry.biz goes on to report,

Details of what exactly is present in the next-generation PlayStation dev kits are sparse, but according to one development source, "they're more advanced than the PowerMac kits [Microsoft] has given us [for Xenon] - they're still prototypes, but they're closer to what'll be in the final console... The graphics chip isn't there, say, but we can get a pretty good idea by taking an NVIDIA 6800 and saying, okay, it'll be like this but faster."
We'll update as we get more details from Sony and these developers

Last EGM(magazine) quoted an unnamed source from an "large" publisher saying how PS3 are way more powerful than the next Xbox.

If these infomation are correct, looks like Playstation and Xbox will be in for a role reversal. In this round, Xbox will get the headstart and Playstation will follow with more powerful machine, playing catch-up. Should be interesting. :)

This alone already has me quivering in anticipation! Just imagine what GT5 will look like with that sort of power behind it!

And I'd imagine most major devs for Sony already have a very good idea as to what the PS3's specs are. Rockstar and PD, for instance, are probably already working on their first titles for the PS3, and would therefore have to have a good idea about what they will have to work with so they can get development well underway so perhaps Sony can have some of their big cash cow franchises ready for the PS3's launch.

I haven't gotten my hands on either one yet (and I'd probably be NDAed into silence if I did), but of the two, I'm more excited about programming for the PS3.

The multiple-cell design will probably have a lot of fun stuff that I can do with it.

The big reason, though, is the way that PS2 programming and XBox programming differ. On the PS2, easy things are easy to do, and hard things are hard to do. On the XBox, hard things to do are a little easier but the easy things to do are more complex (if you get my drift).

I don't work for a developer on the scale of PD or R*, but we'll definitely be doing next-gen console development (probably as soon as my current project ships). This is a fun time, and the next two years will only get better.

As far as which one will be "better" though? Good lord. Who knows until about a year after launch? It'll take that long before developers start to really fall into a groove about what the new consoles can use. Launch titles are rarely great, IMO. Sure, you'll have one or two that are awesome, but it takes a while for that to trickle out to "regular" developers.

Who cares what either of them 'look like' - so long as it isn't as big as the current XBox, I don't care what it looks like. I want it to be BAD ASS. It could be pink with yellow spots and fur for all I care.

If they were fur-trimmed I'd buy two.

Both systems should be smaller, Sony may use the external power supply and no HD/HD dock of the PS2. Xbox2 however, if it still uses the PC in a small box method with no HD might be a little bigger plus it "will" have 4 controller ports unlike PS3.

I'm just exited to see the first games on either system.

I find your idea very interesting also. :O But I do have some of my own concerns...:indifferent:. Since the next Xbox will be coming out before the PS3, would it really help Xbox? Even if it does, PS3 may still run over the next Xbox when it comes out later. (giving it some time that is!) :O

I agree. Xbox should do a lot better with the new system(actually make money), but I highly doubt it will overtake PS3(or come close).

P.S. I'm an Playstation guy, but I'm kind of hoping Nintendo will survive. Their stubborn philosophy/approach to videogame consoles might actually finish them for good this time. 👎 Seriously, are there anybody taking the "Revolution" seriously? :guilty:

Absolutely.

There's a good chance that their controllers are going to be great.

Wireless out-of-the-box is something that's just too cool for words as a guy who has kids that are always tripping over the cables to the consoles.

Plus, their games are simply awesome. At my company, the level designers have a motto that they use constantly: "What would Miyamoto do?"

Since the GCN is nowhere near dead (despite anecdotes to the contrary-- look at international sales), and since Nintendo is a financially very healthy company, it's a real mistake to count them out of the next generation.

If they play just a little nicer with 3rd party developers, then they could easily come out on top in the next generation. In my opinion, we won't really know what's what in the next generation until all 3 have been out at least a year.

Now, do I take the Phanotom console seriously? No.

People are still talking about the Phantom? I thought that project died or something, it never seemed destined for anything but the garbage bin.

As long as the Ps3 gets backwards compatability, then it mihgt get a bit of a boost compared to XBox 2.

I have to admit, I don't know much about the Revolution. From what I hear though, it sounds like they are trying to be "different" again, which is not good IMO(I don't like the DS either). If they still won't support online or DVD player capability, they might be in trouble. As far as their games go, you don't have to tell me how good they are, I own a GameCube. :)

Hiya! :D :O  Meow! (='.'=)

I agree also that Nintendo shjouldnt be ignored for the next generation game consoles. Nintendo got some of their own popular franchise that can at least keep it going like Zelda, Super Smash Bros series, and Metroid Prime. :O

The next Xbox look likes it may have some stuff up their sleeves as they now have the creator of Final Fantasy to make RPGs so Microsoft can have a chance in Japan and the RPG audience. Rare still didnt make Perfect Dark yet, but its now rumored to show up in the next Xbox.

The PS3 better have a strong launch to gain an early momentum during its release to change the earlier launch from the next Xbox. Can we please have Gran Turismo 5 as a launch date? Yes? :O:O:O

Is this "Revolution" the same as the early N5? And what is the Phantom? I haven't been following the Next-Gen Systems latly and need to read up. :)
Links? Please.

I didn't know that. Score 1 for the Xbox!............ except for me, personally, only game that interest me from the Xbox camp is still just Halo. I used to love "Dragon Quest" and other RPGs, but kind of grew out of them.

Have they done anything, since N64? I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for those guys. :D

Sounds like you know more about the new Nintendo than I do. I don't know much about Phantom either(sorry). I think it was some super expensive, PC-like game system?(I could be totally wrong).

I don't have linkies handy, sorry.

The "phantom" bit is meant as a joke (we use it as such in my company all the time).

The Revolution is Nintendo's code name for their next console.

HOLD UP!!!

Enough with this rambling of uneducated thought. If any new console is larger than a Mac mini it has been poorly designed.

indexdimensions20050111.jpg

It is FAR more powerful than the current consoles and could be even more powerful very easily. It is also cheap and includes a ton of software that you would not need on a console, which would aid in cost reductoin.

Basically a Mac mini (in black) with no modem or audio jack, the DVI would break out into various A/V multi-connectors, and there would be six USB ports instead of two. It would also include 802.11G and Bluetooth (for wireless controllers).

Make it. I will buy it. I've got $500 ready to go.
