Xbox??? Who is this Xbox??
My brother and I were thinking about the future of the Playstation and what it will need to do to dominate the Console market. We first noticed that MS has beef with Google (Bing, Windows 7 Phone OS, Word Processing etc.). So we realized this: What if the PS4 ran a derivative of Android? It would DOMINATE the console market, since Android is gaining popularity. They would need it to be a Sony derivative however, since pirating would be an issue. But like, you could create thousands of apps for it, a PROPER web browser and apps that would relate to the game (Customize LBP character on your phone, GT6 B-Spec remote races.. etc).

Any ideas?

That's an interesting proposition, especially with desktop operating systems merging with their mobile counterparts. I think the variables are how popular Android is by the time the PS4 is released, and how Sony implements it. I can't see Sony using android as the base OS, but perhaps as an extension so you can still play your favourite Android games and sync information between the system and your phone/tablet.

It's probably too far into the PS4 development to go for a new OS, unless they had planned to do that from the start, which is unlikely. We all saw what happened last time they let you boot an alternative OS, it led to the console being hacked (Though it was inevitable anyway, it allowed it to happen sooner).

I agree with Tesla in that there could be some features which can be used on your phone in conjunction, but I don't imagine it would be free as it could eat into Sony handheld console sales.

How would it eat into hand held sales when the PS4 will be a home console (Remember, there's the PS Vita). In fact, it would BOOST the sale of android devices, ESPECIALLY Sony ones, if they make something special/proprietary for the Sony ones.

Regarding the fact that it would be hacked, they could make it like the iPod nano 4th gen firmware where it is safely locked. They can also make it a Sony Android OS, meaning that it is a derivative of Android, making it safer.

I had been pondering about roughly the same concept: an appconsole. What we have seen is that companies like Apple have applied the gameconsole concept (closed ecosystem) to the smartphone/tablet. I think it's only natural to evolve into app consoles (e.g. closed boxes that run software from online markets/stores).

This is a very likely future partnership.

Sony and Google have had a very good relationship in recent times and it was even rumoured (well it still rumoured) that Google TV could be coming to PS3. As apps are the new big thing and as Apple and MS have shown with Lion and Windows 8 basically everything needs to run apps Android on PS3 (maybe not entirely the OS but some of emulation) is likely.

But really it should be something done now, not for the PS4 whenever that will be. It would be a real unique selling point in addition to 3D and the Blu Ray drive.

No, sony should keep its own OS. What makes a OS good is its sdk, and any one can download the android sdk and begin creating apps for it, then sell it on the market. Thats where consoles should be heading next and they can learn from this example. I think the Wii U will have this option. Just think, a nintendo market place :dopey: with generated content in which many developers dont have to buy a 10k SDK kit for. Only thing google should be built into the browser, or google tv... hell cramp as much google apps as possible 👍 👍.

Too bad Sony gets far too caught up doing cute things with their hardware and not enough with the OS. Their tablet kind of shows this off - they'd skin and mod Android to the point it would be pointless for the general consumer base.

After what happened with the otherOS/Linux removal, I would have thought, that Sony will be moving as far away from another OS running on the Ps4.

Agreed. Android is open source and if that's on the console the hacking and modding opportunities are endless. It'd be incredibly cool and a very nice selling feature but I'm doubting anything like it will happen.

I do think a Google-Sony partnership is much more likely. I think Google could help with:

-Friends, how you interact with them, find them and so on

-Things like Xbox Live has where you can manage your entire profile and even buy content on the pc web and then download it on the console.

-A proper web browser

-A game video recorder, one that would work with all games giving consent and would record game footage whenever you like and then allow you to upload it to YouTube directly from the console. This would allow for HD videos and would hugely increase number of YouTube videos and views... Win-
