Dr. Richard Marks, the man behind the PS3's upcoming Eye Camera, says that the device's most important feature is its background noise-reducing microphone.

Speaking to Level Up the good doctor said, "The hands-free voice input this enables may be the single most important feature of Playstation Eye. Previously, the only way to get clean voice data was using a headset worn by the player; now, without wearing a headset, players will be able to talk freely".

"The device is especially good at removing ambient sounds like traffic and wind noises from outside, the whirring of fans, etc. Also, there is special processing to remove the game sounds generated by the PS3 itself."

The Eye Camera was officially announced by SCEE last week, sporting a two-position zoom lens, various capture modes and improved tracking and responsiveness with a stupidly-quick frame rate upto 120fps.

It'll be in the shops this summer for an unknown price - though according to Marks it'll be quite affordable: "I don't know exactly when the price announcement for PlayStation Eye will be, but please note that the model used for the rough cost design was EyeToy."

Can anyone explain to me why you need a video running at 120fps? I'm sure the human eye can't detect anything much over 60fps, making it rather useless.

i dont see how microphone can separate game sounds and talk. Nobody wants to shout over game soundtrack across living room. I might use that with pc but not with game console.
120 FPS camera, Yeah let's sacrifice another spu for that!(one is bind to security)

Why not? If the PSE knows what is sent to audio out, it can block the identical signals coming through audio in.

G.T

Bragging rights, and I've heard some games (Eye of Judgement) need the extra framerate to differentiate things and whatnot... but take that with a grain of salt.

Microphone is on camera.

Sound coming to mic is analogue mess of game sountrack and talk. Even phases of game soundtrack are mixed thanks to surround 5.1 setups. It can be done with some fourier calculation to separate all pieces, and then take only talk over internet.(or just adjust amplification of talk) If someone knows exactly how it can be done, please tell us. So again it takes processing.

Simple headset-mic combo doesn't need anyting special. Talk is louder because mic is close to mouth.(yes you hear some game effects from your friend ,but that is "realistic")

ps: what is wrong with my image code?

Yeah they have said that the 120fps (i cant remember where, maybe threespeech) would help with games and improve the movement recognition. If you think about it it would be a sensitivity issue. Running at 5 fps it would have to fill in big blanks betwwen frames. So i assume the greater the framerate the smaller the recognition can go ie: finger movements rather than arm or barcodes on cards when moving. Otherwise to the ps3 all it would pick up is motion blur.
As for human eyes not seeing past 60fps thats a myth. Being able to distinguish the difference on a screen which is ltd by its own refresh rate is another matter.
A little bit of common sense. If you watch a frame by frame on tv and a fast car goes by it will appear in its first frame halfway across the screen. In reality if that same car went by, you would see it the whole way across your vision although blurry. If our eyes had a really low refresh rate at the same rate as that camera then we would see the same thing.we would have objects appear and dissapear in our vision.

Don't know why but that camera reminds me of the star wars imperial cruisers!... looks good in its red and black colour scheme... although the old eye toy looked great aswell.
