well a while back i saw a post on here about a guy asking how he can save movies from the DVD onto his computer. the thread was closed by a moderator because it was "illegal" and wont be "tolerated" here on GTP. well could you explain how this is illegal? i was actually wanting to do the same thing because i own a lot of DVD's and it would actually make it more convenient for me to have them all on my computer. as far as i know the only thing that would make it illegal is if i were to re-produce them for my own profit or give them out to anyone. i dont plan on giving them out or selling them or even making copies of them. i own all these movies and i would just like them on my computer. i dont see anything illegal happening. i think whoever claimed it was illegal is wrong. but if IM wrong then please proove it to me.

Most DVDs now are copy protected so that you can't copy them onto your hard drive. In order to copy them onto your harddrive you need to break that copy protetcion, which is illegal.

Yeah, the U.S Congress passed an act in 1998 that said it's illegal to copy DVD's. So even if you have no intent to sell or distribute them, you're still copying them, which is obiously, illegal.

Unfortunately, you also need to break that copy protection to just play a DVD on Linux/Unix systems, which is just plain stupid.

So although I am not copying it, it is still illegal for me to watch a DVD.

Firstly: When placing a copy on your hard drive, you are breaking the copyright agreement.

Secondly: When placing a copy on your hard drive, you are decrypting the data, which is in breach of the copyright agreement.

Thirdly: Given the ease of use of DVD as a medium, I don't think anyone's really naive enough to believe that you just wanted to "store" the DVD move on your hard disk for no further purpose.
